    Nan Province

Pak Nai: about 2 1/2 hrs drive from Nan city, a lake in the hills on the Nan/Uttaradit border with a car ferry and several floating raft restaurants. Basic accomodation available, too.

It makes a pleasant day out or a boozy overnight stay, karaoke, a variety of Thai dishes with heavy emphasis on fresh local fish and the usual Thai beers and liquors. You may do your own fishing, a bamboo rod is 10bt, great fun for the kids.

The last 10km across the hills are windy, and steep, about as much as one could comfortably do on a rented scooter. There's a car-ferry between the 2 provinces in operation.

    Nice piccies Stroll.

You can also rent a raft and get away from 'civilization'.

I towed a raft up into the wilds and spent a week just fishing and boozing.
When the full moon comes up behind those mountains the whole lake turns silver. Nice place.

Thanks to Thetyim for the tip about Pak Nai.

    Another "tourist attraction':
Sao Din, a stone formation and backdrop for some Thai movie.

    A nice temple nearby:

It's not really worth a trip out, but it's on the way to Si Nan National park:

    Just thought of something.
You don't have to drive all the way to Nan to get there from the south. You can leave your car at Tab Pla, about 40kms east of Uttaradit and go there by boat. The boat trip takes about 4 hours I think.
There is also a supply boat that calls in at every little stop on the way and sells everything from petrol to rice but will take all day to get there.

I head up that way occasionally. Love it everywhere I go. never been to any of those places. Gonna have to fix that. Ever time I go I always seems to insome sort of rush with little enough time to take care of business.
Really need to slow down, take time to smell the flowers when out and about. Thanks for reminding me I've got to remember to travel Thai style: "ไม่ต้องรีป"

    Back on topic.
Here a couple more pics of "Sao Din". Coming from Wiang Sa, turn left after Ban Na Rap police station and follow the signs. It's 15 minutes ride from there, a short diversion from the road to Fa Chu, Si Nan National park.

Right, here some pics of temples in the capital city:

I am no good with names, here a close up of the nameless gem of a temple:

Another one, note the style is different from central Thailand or Lanna, Nan has remained semi-indepent until 1932:

Sorry the quality of my pics varies, some are taken with the mobile.

    I think you meant: "ไม่ต้องรีบ".

    Tricky buggers, these Thai keyboards.
