Today started out with a trek down to the back nine to check on the fruit trees. First up was harvesting limes that had fallen from the tree. I see some margaritas being made in the near future.

The small lemon tree I planted last year is already fruiting!

next up the herb & veggie garden. My gardner’s planted the tomatoes way to close to each other. (and too close to the lemon grass)

We'll have to separate the seedlings and replant them. What was he thinking planting them like that.

    And the eggplant.

It appears he doesnt much like weeding either, as these thai basil plants need some love.

    And the rosemary

And the spinach, I'm seeing a pattern here.

And this mint is growing crazy, but I dont want him to pull it all up either.

Then I received a call. Zambia for what ever reason doesnt have stocks in it's blood banks. So if a patient needs an operation and they dont have blood then it's up to the family to source their own blood. A colleague's brother needed an emergency op and they didnt have blood for him, I've donated once before here, so they knew my blood would work. I was chilling on the sofa, but how can you say no?

First I needed to drive to the hospital, which is usuallyA day in the life in Southern Africa-blood1-jpeg a large complex with many building and find the blood donation building. The sister met me at the entrance. it doesnt look much but at least they use clean needles.

They had a selfie sign, but no I didnt. though I appreciate the efforts to spread the idea.

A day in the life in Southern Africa-blood2-jpeg

A few questions, personal details, the details of the person you are donating too and then they hook you up.

Afterwards you can have a warm pepsi or a warm coke to replace fluids and sugar. They also offered me a bag of sugar and a carton of milk, I suggested they keep those items for the next person because I didnt need them.

    Did he survive?

You wouldn't want the locals blood there, guaranteed contaminated with HIV.

It wouldn't surprise me if he just knows what he is doing and lemongrass keeps the bugs away from your tomatoes

Yeah, packing a 100 seeds on top of each other will mean only a 10th will survive. And you need some space to walk around the plants to harvest the tomatoes at the end!

^ My gardener is exactly the same and I have long given up trying to get him to start seeds off in a seed tray and then transplant them with suitable spacing. He much prefers to just rip the top off a packet of seeds and dump the seeds on top of each other onto the vegetable bed.

It used to bother me to see a load of seedlings crammed together and dying off because they have no space, but other things bother me more now so I hardly notice any more.

That Rosemary... I have tried umpteen times to get Rosemary to grow but have given up. Mint no problem, but not Rosemary.

It can't be temperature because WA gets a lot hotter and Rosemary grows like a weed there. What sort of humidity do you get there in Zambia?

I can assure you he does nothing 'frenetically', although I must admit that I have never caught him in that act on shift.

So after delivering blood and passing on the little slip of paper they give you otherwise the patient cannot access that blood. Decided to stop by that store to pick up a few groceries. In the time it took to go in and out and pick up two bags of groceries they heavens had opened.

No way was I going out in that to get in the car, which is confidently parked on the far side of.

By some good fortunate this mall had a steak shop and bar attached. So wandered down for a drink and a few snacks.

    beef ribs

    oyster mushrooms.

After a few bevvies and a couple of hours later the rain had subsided enough to brave walking to the car. The carpark was flooded mind, which pissed me off walking with wet shoes on. The roads home had a little water on them

A day in the life in Southern Africa-img_2622-jpeg

And the drainage ditches had some water in them. I think this is a foot deep and about two foot wide.

The bone marrow with bread looks interesting likewise the mushrooms. I reckon some parts of Africa can't imagine that it rains. I'm pretty sure Sudan had never heard of rain.

Nope, and that’s the problem. No 7/11s or equivalent. Supermarkets only. It’s brutal for any would be TEFLrs. Plus everyone already speaks English so no need. But apparently Chitty taught English in the British Council in Zambia.

    a dark ale. $2.20 equivalent.

It’s a craft beer, so I could happily sit here all afternoon.

Poor old grumpy men. ‘Tis obvious that it should have said conveniently but the old auto correct got me. And if you think that’s not obvious it says more about you and your mental acumen, than mine.

Oh, and how isn't it a 'grumpy old man' thing when you're either on here drunk, 65 years old, not making sense or just being a [at][at][at][at]?

Jet setting all over the planet , eating like a king.

King Willy by name and nature.

Cyrilles just jealous of anyone who's done better than him in life.

That's just about everyone on here, no wonder he's so angry and antagonistic. It shines through with his every post.

The only thing he has to look forward to in his retirement is vigorously polishing his CCTV and arguing pissed up on here.
    Shalom
