Lovely bit of weaving looks more like wool to me, I am sure your wife will be delighted. I have earnt over the years 2 gifts better, As the old adage goes presents endear absents
It is not as Dingle-dodgy as you might fear Mendip. It seems to be a name for circumcision which I had never heard before. You learn something every day on Teh DOOR
I think you are on the money Reg
I suspected that circumcision might have been the reason but I did not think they did that in the Philippines, being a mostly Catholic country.
I remember there was one lad at school who had been snipped for some reason and he said he used baby oil - which now I am thinking has done the trick for me in the hands of a seasoned professional on my safari trips
^ It's a small world Helge. Does 'Dusavik' mean anything in Scandi language?
^^ Thank you BC. All is well although six weeks is a bit long to be honest, but long haul travel is so awful these days I'd rather do 2 six weeks trips than 3 four week trips. I guess you can't have it both ways.
The braised oxtail was fantastic and much to the Filipinos disgust I had it three times when it kept coming out at meal times. Randy made it for his fellow compatriots and I was the only Westerner who ate it... which suited me just fine. It's top of my list to try cooking when I get back home, although oxtails are expensive in Thailand. I guess you can get many steaks or ribs from each cow but the average beast only has one tail.
Sunrise yesterday at Johan Sverdrup...
Yesterday we were working on the pipelines connecting to the north of the complex and I never did get my picture of the lifeboats at the west end. We've left now but didn't get the project finished due to the drill rig in some of the pictures obstructing our access to a subsea template... they're bigger and way more expensive than us so they take precedent. The vessel will go back to finish up later in the year but most likely I'll be elsewhere.
Despite over four weeks of regular gym and careful eating it doesn't feel like I've lost a single ounce. I was there yet again tonight and caught the second half of a football match...
Followed by fish soup for breakfast... not as good as Randy's but not bad at all. The new night cook with the mullet seems Ok but I haven't learnt his name yet.
Tonight we've started a new project at the Gina Krog field.
That beam of light isn't coming from the moon, it's coming from one of the ship's search lights to keep sight of that bloody great yellow buoy floating in the sea. A drilling rig is due here in a couple of days and the anchors are already in place for it, their positions marked by floating buoys attached to the anchors on the seabed by chains. The ship and ROV crew will have to be careful not to get snagged tonight.
The Norwegians have taken to naming their oil fields after 'famous' Norwegian people but apart from that guy from Aha and the weird looking yeti who plays for Man City, I think they struggle to find anyone known outside of Norway. Apparently Gina Krog was some kind of feminist from back in the past. A bit stern looking for my taste.
And her namesake. We currently have the platform off our starboard side and the FSO (Floating Storage Offloading) is off to port. I'll take a picture of that when it gets light later.
We have several pipelines to inspect and are also surveying a proposed route for a new pipeline, probably associated with the new well about to be drilled by the soon to arrive rig.
And beneath the sea and the seabed...
There... the FSO at sunrise, the pic taken through the ROV hangar to save going outside.
I'm quite pleased with these pics, to be honest.
I didn't want to go outside for two main reasons... one was that we're working inside the Gina Krog 500m safety zone which would have meant wearing full PPE to go outside... so I took this through a window.
But mainly because it's blowing a gale outside and the seas are coming up...
And I didn't want to get wet.
Bendy have you thought about getting on the survey ships that do the surveys for the offshore wind turbines as I expect there will be a lot of work around Australia doing this work and it is likely warmer and closer than the frozen north.
Or does working on the hippy tree hugging renewable energy projects cause you to break out in cold sweats of hydrocarbons ?
^
Bendy?
WTF is Bendy???
There is an awful lot of wind farm work all around European waters at the moment... I get emails from agents almost daily.
The contractor I've currently thrown my lot in with has been burnt before in the wind farm industry and is sticking to oil and gas at the moment but they will have to get into the wind farm work at some point... it's all the same shit really. These guys are also dabbling with deep sea mining which could be interesting.
The main thing for me is that day rates are currently better in oil and gas.
And the tax in Australia? No thanks, although it would be nice to work somewhere warmer.
Top posts.
Another Thread Of The Year award for Bendy-Mendy-The-Rigpig-Rogerer, no doubt.
With that, I'm sure you mean 'known by you'.
Even you will know some of Norways proud history in exploring the world
You could ask a norwegian, why they don't name a field after their best known countryman.
Quisling !
Please video the encounter
I haven't heard of this Gina woman either
Oinks gadzooks and lummy TEAKHOLZ TÜR?
A bit of low shot, many Irish , Swedes, Frogs and even English prisoners joined the Schutzstaffel Fascists plus of course
"During the course of the war, approximately 6,000 Danes joined the corps, including 77 officers of the Royal Danish Army.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Corps_Denmark
Of course many brave Danes,Norwegians perished to quash the nazis at Telemark etc as I am sure you well know.
All this was a long time ago but you poked the poster.
Preventing the Austrian megalomaniac from acquiring nuclear fission is proabbly why this form is not called TEAK TÜR
All organisations have black sheep , don't be a sheep shagger or mar Mendy's pist of the year by becoming a troll eh? I realize knobrot and pist sox change can make you irritable but best not spread the negativity. I'll pour some of the new balmy special ointment for special oiksvia pm through your catflap thanks to the new improved Socalatron
^ To be honest I didn't see anything in Helge's comment other than a bit of humour... but no, I won't suggest naming an oil field after Quisling.
And as for the cute Filipina 'laundry maid'... some thoughts are best kept to myself. And FYI... they're all cute after four weeks.
I've had some insults in my time but that's a low shot... I loathe Elton John. And I still have a full head of hair so no similarities whatsoever.
You have a Cold Heart, Bogon.
I've just realised I have four pillows with the two spare from the top bunk.
Thanks Mike, I'll see what I can do.
Yes, to be honest. Nice people, a nice boat and regular crew changes play a part these days. Maybe once the daughter's older I'll look again at West Africa work but I'm getting used to the cushy life.
Yesterday we finished up at Gina Krog and are currently transiting directly into 30kt winds and 6m seas coming from the SE, to our next project. We started the transit at 7pm and I know this because that's precisely the time I was woken up by the vessel movement. It's gonna be a long shift... everything keeps moving about on my desk, my chair keeps sliding across the floor and one of my b@stard monitors keeps going up and down because the bracket isn't tight enough. But I'm Still Standing!
Our next project is 600km of visual pipeline inspection on Europipe I, the entire length of the pipeline that exports gas from the Draupner Platform to Dornum in Germany. Apart from As-laid and As-built surveys I've never before known one these trunk export pipelines to be visually inspected for it's entire length, but I guess this is thanks to Putin... the Norwegians are protecting their assets. During the inspection that should take around a week, we'll be passing through Danish waters but thankfully when surveying export pipelines we get dispensation from the horrendous tax the Danes like to charge... sorry about that Helge. If weather delays us, maybe we'll have a Danish or German crew change when I leave the vessel.
No way I'm going outside tonight to take a picture so a small recap is in order...
As I mentioned, the Norwegians like to name their oil fields after 'famous' local celebrities. We have recently finished a few days work at the Johan Sverdrup field... named after some 19th Century Norwegian politician.
My first project when I arrived on this boat was at the Aasta Hansteen field, way up north off Bødo.
A fascinating structure with some great pictures on the internet for anyone interested in such things...
And the great woman herself, a 19th Century painter. This is Aasta's 'famous' self portrait. One thing I've noticed is that Norwegians didn't look nearly so happy before they discovered oil and were still a northern, cod-subsisting backwater.
And I'm currently still working on a Power From Shore project to Snøhvit, for many years the most northerly Norwegian oil field. We spent two weeks up north after I joined the vessel at Hammerfest.
Yes, Snøhvit is Snow White, although I didn't realise she was Norwegian.
Which reminds me... you can get Snow White costumes on Lazada. I'll maybe do a bit of shopping before I go home in a couple of weeks!

^ Is that all you take from my fascinating post?
Anyway, I've done some research on the net for you.
Incidentally, before it was decommissioned the Frigg field used to straddle the UK-Norwegian border and there was a walkway between one platform in the UK and one platform in Norway... ie the only bridge between the UK and Continental Europe. It would have made a good pub quiz question at the time.
Overview
FUKA stands for Frigg UK Association which refers to the original development of the cross UK/Norwegian border Frigg gas field – with the 362 km, 32” FUKA pipeline being constructed to transport the gas from the UK part of the Frigg field to St Fergus, with a parallel pipeline constructed to transport the gas from the Norwegian part of Frigg to St Fergus, the Frigg Norwegian pipeline. The pipelines and facilities began initial operations in 1977.

^^^ that Snow White costume looks similar to the German/ Bavarian/ Oktoberfest costumes, but then the traditional costumes from Northern Europe have similarities.
I'd like to wear an Oktoberfest costume but I'm afraid of being blamed for "cultural appropriation", so never mind... Heh.
I have this question in mind re: Looper's remark, but it might derail the thread again, so I'll keep silent...

Btw, I've learned that Snow White is a classic "winter" in the "seasonal colour analysis" system, which I've been learning about the past few months. I've figured out my "season" and I'm a "true autumn". (This is girly fashion stuff that may not be relevant to the thread, but colour analysis has made a comeback and it's trending on social media now. Fortunately, I already have lots of clothes in my colour season.)

Mendy, I do read the technical stuff abt the ship/ industry/ your work, so keep on keeping on...
Try it on us first Katie, we're a sensitive bunch and we'll let you know if we're offended
