Quite a detailed post mortem here

Interesting discussion of manoeuvring with azimuth pod propellers and the autopilots system

Not realising for 12 minutes you are on autopilot while unable to control the vessel is a very basic error

The manual emergency procedure even states that the first thing to check is whether you are in auto or manual mode, which was not done

Colossal fuck-up from the captain and pilot crew who seem bizarrely unfamiliar with the system.

Strangely no mention of any ROV although it sounds like a civilian survey crew were on board with the Navy boat crew.

Indeed, whatever the details, it is her professional failure. A navy captain who loses his ship would normally be facing court-martial. My NZ mate reckons that the woke culture is now so pervasive there that no one will challenge her, because that will call into question the whole process that put her in a position of responsibility that was clearly beyond her capabilities.

    Agree with both above

My old skipper never made such errors and would have accepted a court martial dishonourable discharge with loss of pension. A ship cannot be run as a democracy everyone's safety and the environment, cargo , other seafarers all depend on competence.

I am not suggesting anyone be executed or keel hauled but no consequences just reinforces the everyone's a winner nonsense, which suitable for special needs kindergarten inclusivity not a professional navy that may be in combat off Taiwan soon.

I follow a youtube channel about boating and a guy had a autopilot installed on his boat. The installer stressed repeated that if hand steering was unresponsive, make fooking sure the autopilot is off and showed him where to look for the indicators (autopilot and on his chart plotter).

I know nothing about driving a boat and I haven't watched the YT videos. Surely the captain or delegate would have to instruct someone to turn the autopilot on? So at least two people must know its status. Did they then go off for afternoon tea and simply forget to mention it?
I am trying to imagine these people in charge of a real warship with advanced munitions.

^ It's bad enough imagining these people in charge of a survey vessel with no munitions... I certainly wouldn't work on it.

I've just never heard of anything like this happening before.

What if another vessel crossed their path?

What if it was a diving vessel with divers in sat?

Whoever was on that bridge should be prosecuted for negligence at the very least.

^ Making them pay for it with their salary and pension would teach them.
