Quite possibly... but I've got Lola now and she doesn't complain about anything.

She seems to enjoy sleeping under the fans!

I think you just get used to it.

One thing I notice about getting home after a trip offshore... after getting used to the background noise and vibration it can be too quiet for me to sleep at home, even more so with windows shut and aircon on.

I do get awoken sometime by the dogs going off but I prefer that and hearing what's going on outside to being isolated from it with the windows shut.

I now only stay in hotels with balconies or opening windows and always sleep with the doors or windows open at night. I find it really hard to sleep without the fresh air and air movement and can feel quiet claustrophobic if I get stuck in a hotel with sealed windows.

I can't imagine living, never mind sleeping without aircon.

Perhaps Mendip's "coat" and outer layer of blubber regulates his body temperature?

^ I'm going to completely ignore that.

^^ We have mozzie screens on all the windows so it really is no problem.

    Most normal people don't.

Here in Seattle, I use AC for about 4 months of the year, otherwise it is switched off and most likely the heat is switched on. Anytime the temps get over 73/23 the AC goes on. Mendy is a nutter, IMHO.

Currently, 42.6F/6c outside and 68F/20c inside, and I actually have a window open. I am just up hill from a lake and love the fresh, cool air in the house.

Me either, something wrong with that boy! - he's an offshore hand - I know? - Dam site healthier to sleep with AC than heat, the ideal temp for the body to relax, clean and regenerate is ~ 19c if its hot and sweaty instead of cleaning up, its wasting sleep time cooling down....

We don't have Aircon downstairs but do have a ceiling and floor fans. AC on in the bedrooms though.

My work office had no AC at all today and it was horrific. Couldn't even open a window for some breeze as there was none.

^^ A cold shower before bed, cover meself in that cooling powder and all fans on 3.

A few hours sleep and then wash the sweaty sheets in the morning!

It may not be ideal in the hot season but I get fresh air and know that the dogs will wake me if we have an intruder. Or if a cat sits on the wall, or if the neighbour's dog barks... etc...

The wife and I don't use A/C in the bedroom unless it's really fooking hot. A fan is good enough but the average night time temp here is 24.

So much so that you installed aircon and don't let anyone turn it on, it seems.

    ^^^^ Her loss!

Edit: I see a lot of discussion regarding my sleeping arrangements while I'm trying to write an informative post.

I'm no tightwad and the wife and daughter are more than welcome to use aircon when it gets hot, well... really hot. I just frown on it, that's all. I just don't like it, never have, never will... I hate the feeling of being closed in with the windows shut, I hate to sleep in still air and I get aircon head which is no fun.

And I'm being environmentally friendly... but I do get the paradox as I'm posting on my work thread in the oil and gas industry.

    End of.

About time to get this thread back on track, me thinks.

Today we started our work at the Gullfaks field with some pipeline inspection around the Gullfaks B Platform.

There are three GBS (Gravity Based Structures) in the Gullfaks field and like an iceberg, there's a lot more underneath the water than above. Gullfaks started producing in the mid 80s and the field still has another 10 plus years to go... taking it 30 years past it's original design life. There is currently a campaign of drilling at new satellite wells so maybe an another 10 years is a bit of an underestimate.

I've been a regular visitor to Gullfaks since my first year offshore in 1991 and as I took a photo of Gullfaks Bravo today I couldn't help noticing something new... if you look extremely carefully along the horizon to the left of the platform you can see several wind turbines. My phone camera hasn't picked them up very well.

Equinor are currently undertaking a programme of platform electrification and they must have decided to power Gullfaks using these wind turbines. I've read that electrification can reduce a platform's carbon footprint by up to 50%.

Over the past few years we've also been surveying new routes for PFS Cables - Power From Shore - to carry electricity from shore to the oil and gas fields. This is my favoured method of platform electrification as it creates us a lot of extra work.

Being in a shared cabin with a sealed porthole must be fun.

Cool info about the industry etc though, cheers.

To be hoped they have improved power cables, we tried this in Brunei some years back, voltage drop was so much it was useless by the time it reached platform...

^ It's not my area but I can only assume that it is working. We've worked on many PFS cable routes between platforms and shore and many of these platforms are 80 plus km from land.

^^ I have my own cabin but no porthole at all since I have an 'aisle' cabin in the middle of the ship. But yes, it can be an issue.

The majority of Norwegian platforms broadcast 4G which is a far cry from 30 years ago when you had one phone call a week... and very often couldn't get through. If something happened at home and you'd forgotten to give your love ones the company/ship phone number, then you just didn't get to know about it until you returned to land.

You have to be careful though... this Ship's Network costs a bomb and usual practice is to turn on Airplane Mode on your device and then turn on Wifi to just get the vessel's Wifi network. Most vessels have half decent Wifi since Covid.

It seems that 02 roaming doesn't offer data, probably because it costs about £5 a Meg... so £30 to download a photo!

There are stories or people getting bills for hundreds of pounds after forgetting they are connected to the Ship's Network... a few App updates and it doesn't take long.

It's very strange you say that.

I've been trying to find a phone number for the VFS lot at Trendy... yesterday I had two emails, one from VFS to say that my daughter's new British passport has arrived and is ready for collection and one from the personnel guy at this company asking if I could stay on for an extra two weeks, making it a six week trip, ending May17th.

Trendy will only hold my daughter's passport for 30 days, therefore I will just miss that deadline. I've requested they hold the passport for a few extra days so that I can collect it on my way home, but no answer as yet...

This should really be in my passport renewal thread, but as you brought it up.

Apologies to myself for going off topic.
