    Saint Augustine get away.

Finally I was able to get in the car and drive down south to Florida. Went to Saint Augustine to take a look around the lovely and historical place.

It is a part of history they didn’t teach in elementary school here!

The Shrine of Our Lady of La LeChe

Here she is. As a Protestant, I was shocked! My friend who went with me is Catholic. She said the shrine had recently been remodeled to add a crown to Mary. The Pope had requested it be done.

The cemetery. Beautiful and quiet place.

Interesting is the material of the fort and most of all St. Augustine buildings and streets, coquinoa.

That gray rock, is it local or did the Spanish bring it out with them?

    Great thread, thanks MK.

Given the historic significance of the place ... there seems to be so few visitors (in your photos) ?

Great thread, thanks for taking the time MisKit. Just goes to show all the history we learned in school doesn't really match the real world!

The old city gate. St. Augustine had a wall surrounding it at one time. It was a low wooden thing I don’t see how it could keep anyone out unless they were very short.

It does seem low, but notice the ground level has been rising. I wonder how far down the wall goes?

Florida born and raised I never thought about visiting St. Augustine. But with large open spaces it might be something to think about during Covid.

^ I went as a child and was unimpressed by the Fountain of Youth. It is still old Florida in that touristic kind of way. The historic district has been restored very well and is a knock out beautiful place. Get over there!

Great thread , and beautiful picture. Thank you for sharing. We actually lived , and still own a home 15 minutes from there and have been there many times. A great way to spend the day. We enjoyed eating at the historic Columbia restaurant , did you get a chance to eat there? The Paella Valenciana was very good.

It is local to FL and it is called Coquina stone. After many years In the hot sun it turns black but as the name implies it is red or actually kind of pink in color. It is composed off compressed clam shell fragments. hence to original color and is relatively soft and easy to carve.

Easy to miss with so much to do.
Nice atmosphere and good food but a bit overprized. My brother in law is Columbian and we often went there with him, but if it wasn't for him we would not go so often. Many other places to eat with just as good food, but better prices.
Seeing your pictures brought back good memories.

Very interesting history there and a sphenic ride.
    Saint Augustine get away.-matanzas-jpg

"The feud between Catholics and Protestants in the sixteenth century was not just fought within the borders of Europe but exploded into the growing colonies and settlements of the empires abroad. Many protestants fearing the violence of Europe sought refuge in the New World and a desire to set up their own settlements free of persecution. One of these such voyages was led by Jean Ribault who led a group of French protestants to the new world to set up a base. After failing to create a settlement off the coast of South Carolina, Ribault set sail for Florida in 1565. The voyage of the French was doomed from the start as the Spanish Crown had already claimed all of Florida and were warned of the protestants trying to create a settlement there.

King Philip II of Spain ordered Pedro Menendez to rid the French out of the area on the basis of heresy. Menendez created a base in St. Augustine and the French created their own base to the south called Fort Caroline. The two groups began to attack one another over the course of several small battles. Eventually, Ribault decided to launch an attack on St. Augustine and took the bulk of his forces by sea to attack the Spanish fort from the coast. Unfortunately for the French, a storm wrecked all of their ships shortly after they set sail for their attack. Menendez also took advantage of the storm and captured the unguarded French fort to the south and massacred over 130 civilians. The Spanish eventually discovered the shipwrecked survivors near a river and they suffered the same fate as their fellow countrymen. The river where the French were discovered was named Matanzas meaning river of blood"

Pedro Menendez really had little choice in the matter and the French would have done the same. If the did not murder them and took the prisoners. they would have had to feed them, and provide man power he did not have to guard them. if they did not guard them affectively, the French could have escaped themselves ,and faced with the same realities would have done the same to the Spanish,
    Those were brutal times.
