I rented a Winnebago outta Oakland Airport via San Jose Seaside Monterey then stock up at Mall just S of Carmel -by-thesea where I saw David Cameron !! Rhat's where the best stretch starts to Moro Bay, stopping at A Morela National Park at Big Sur, Esalen Cambria, Sovang Santa Barbara , Malibu Venice (drop off LAX was about $300 extra). From Big Sur great views and hikes into teh Contra Costa , very few facilities so stock up.
Near the naval college is San Simeon Hearsts fantasy land well worth a peek.
