Peru: Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu

Finally got round to seeing Machi Picchu before it all went tits up last month, but also spent a few days in Lima beforehand. Lima was a very pleasant city and more geared up for tourists than other places in the region. Decent airbnb for about 35 quid a night.

    Nice view from the balcony.

Rooftop with pool, sauna and bar.

Peru has a big Chinese population so it was nice to get some decent Asian food. This Chinese was the first of the trip, but by no means the last.

Then out and about enjoying the nightlife in the bohemian part of Barranco.

One of Peru's most famous drinks is the pisco sour and it was time to sample the first few of the trip.

Pisco, egg white, lime juice...and they pack a punch. Especially when it's 2 for 1!

Stumbled home later that night with plenty of people sat around in the parks eating, drinking and selling their wares.

Headed away from Barranco and into Miraflores the next day, which is probably the busiest part of Lima as far as bars, restaurants and general tourism goes.

Peru: Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu-barranco-sign-jpg

Away from the bars a kilometre or so further south, Barranco us very sedate and wealthy.

First stop was food and time to hit the seafood. Ceviche and some fried fish were the order of the day. Both great.

Out and about and the sun had come out. It was the Lima derby that day and both sets of fans were out in force outside their team's hotel.

    Awaiting an opponent...

Didn't manage to get a lamb rogan josh here, but I did get some coca sweets. The leaves are perfectly legal and stuff like this was available everywhere.

Peru: Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu-coca-sweets-jpg

Now over to Huaca Pucllana whose ruins predate even the Inca era. The pyramid is in the centre of Miraflores and the site is still being excavated in parts. Best enjoyed with a beer.

Peru: Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu-lima-ruins-beer-jpg

Peru: Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu-lima-ruins-2-jpg

After an hour there it was time to get back on the beer and enjoy what had been a very very very good day.

The final day in Lima was spent downtown and then relaxing by the beach. Two very different places. Lima has its own lanes for the buses, which are cheap and fast, covering the major tourist spots from north to south.

Peru: Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu-bus-lane-jpg

The good old days pre-social distancing.

Peru: Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu-pre-corona-bus-jpg

    Some classic colonial architecture downtown.

The police were moving people on, so it was time for a short walk to Chinatown for a massive plate of 3 layered pork.

It was, of course, absolute chaos nearby. If only these pictures had volume.

Enough of this. Time to hit the beach for a sundowner or 12.

No shortage of sports by the beach.

Plenty of surfing places for anyone wanting to give it a go...

...but my goal was the pier in the background. More specifically, the bar.

This coastal road goes, as you'd imagine, right down the coast. Unfortunately, there aren't a great deal of exits if you wanna get back to the top, meaning if you chose to walk and didn't notice a footpath, you would be fucked and have a right schlep on your hands until the next one.

Peru: Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu-lima-road-jpg

Peru: Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu-road-back-jpg

Obviously. I missed the footpath and walked for ages before getting back home for a few beers on the balcony.

Next stop Machu Pichu (via Cusco).

Just by chance I watched South American movie last night.

    Set in the 1490's

"As the Mayan kingdom faces its decline, a young man is taken on a perilous journey to a world ruled by fear and oppression"

    Download Apocalypto (2006) AC3 5.1 MYN 1080p H265 multisub Sp33dy94 MIRCrew Torrent | 1337x

    Very graphic. Great cinematography.

The copy I watched had no English audio or subs. I did locate an alleged subs file which turned out to be the producer and writer discussing the film's making and highlighting certain actions and visual clues like, "watch that tree .."

Similar in style to Apocalypse Now, but from the natives perspective.

Hal, nice thread. I have to say they have cleaned the place up from the dust ridden litter strewn careworn mess i passed through in 89' - glad to see you're not slumming it. Are you doing the trek or incarail?

We didn't have enough time for the 5 day trek from Cusco, so we did PeruRail there and IncaRail back. The bus left Cusco at 6.45am heading for the town of Ollantaytambo where we caught the train to Aguas Calientes. From there we took a short bus ride to Machu Picchu. Some great views of the snow covered Andes on the bus.

And, finally, one of the new seven wonders of the world, Machu Picchu: known as the Lost City of the Incas (which it actually isn't).

Take a bus or walk higher and higher from Aguas Calientes. We were rushing so took the bus.

Quite a few people needing to take a breather at these heights.

Still a few llamas and alpacas up there. Relatives from years ago, perhaps?

    Chinchillas

Speaking as someone who can't even change a light bulb it's pretty fucking impressive the detail that went into this place. They used no animals, tools or wheels to carve out the citadel. I'd have just called my dad to come over...

Hal, it got closed numerous times over the years due to overuse / footfall and whilst i have been part of that problem it is like all these sites i just cannot see how they can be sustainably managed. Its either a trade off on keeping them relatively "real" or making them some Disney attraction - the former requires traffic management much like Bhutan.

We were saying that we should have stayed a night there but had already booked 2 nights back in Cusco. There were enough tourist shops and restaurants there as well as ruins to visit but, for me, it would have been nice to have a night because there were only a few tourists around and you could have got offside with the locals and had a few beers. As you can imagine, Cusco was hammered with people from all over the world.

Everywhere we went was perfectly safe though. That was a pleasant change.

    Totally agree with you.

There's a number each day that they allow onto the site at certain times, but it's still gonna have a big effect. Also, nothing is cheap there (the train was about 65 quid each way and the 30 minute bus ride was almost twenty quid return) and the locals would no doubt kick up a fuss if efforts were made to control the numbers further. As you say, it's a trade off and something has to give.

A cautionary note to anyone who does Argentina, Chile, or Peru ...DO NOT GET ON A PONY, its just not worth it. I have ridden a lot but those fukers get wild and frisky if a mare is ON in the group and the first you know about it is when they try mounting them - it happened 3 times on one trek. Me and three mates in Chili got two head wounds before they sent a bus, one of my mates who, given he's not a sea of calm threatened to knock the bloke out coz his horses were fukin out of order (we found that funny) but he's 18 stone and there ain't much blubber on him so they agreed. Its the wild west Bruce but not as we know it....

Not a bad idea that, Nammers. A few retro shots (like Terry's old stuff) would go down a treat.
