We drove across to the Pacific Ocean side of Point Lomo.

Then back to the city. Some streetscapes. Think I took the last photo because it was one of the few older style buildings in the central business district.

Afternoon tea had been targeted for Extraordinary Deserts. Given we hadn't really hadn't had lunch and what was available, we ordered quite lightly. Was delicious though.

It was on our way back to the hotel when I saw it. A vision from the Middle East...a kebab shop. Not wanting to get carried away I approached it with caution. Was their concept of a kebab the same as mine? Did their ingredients match up with my essentials? Yes, yes and more yes. I'm not saying I'm a kebab fanatic but it is a fact that before the current wife and I retired to the hotel suite on our wedding night, we consumed a chicken kebab with the lot and BBQ sauce sitting on a seat overlooking Manly beach in Sydney. This was okay, a commendable effort for a cuisine that the USA seems to struggle with...solid 6 out of 10. Needed BBQ sauce for an extra point.

Next morning was Tuesday 4 July. We left the hotel and headed back to Phoenix on a more southerly and direct route using I8. Oour first stop was in Pine Valley in the mountains to grab some morning tea,

We continued east on I8 looking to hit Arizona at Yuma. It was interesting drive through the mountain meadows, then down into mid-level desserts and dry mountain passes, then finally onto the low flat plains that was greened from agriculture in some places.

As you may well imagine I'd given the rental car a bit of a nudge but had a hell of a scare when I didn't spot a patrol car parking in the middle of the interstate and presumably checking speeds. It was on a slight left hand bend and he was hidden behind low bushes. Without any time to react I've gone past him above 100 mpg. He didn't chase and I never got a ticket in the mail so the Gods must have been with me. But it did give me such a scare I dropped back to 85. Appreciated the adrenaline hit though.

The main street in Yuma. There may be a reason this place exists but it is not obvious. It gets awefully hot, often 5+ degrees hotter than Phoenix, even in heatwaves.

Continuing east we had to get fuel at Gila Bend. This shop was part of the gas stations. A few eccentric elements.

By now we were well into southern Arizona and familiar Sonora desert landscapes. But were a little behind time in getting the rental car back so could.nt stop and enjoy the sights. We turned north off I8 onto #84, then #347 and entered Maricopa county. We enjoyed the trip and hope you did too.
