After the USS Midway we headed back to the hotel to pick up the car and drove out to Point Loma that is a north/south orientated penilsula that protects the entrance to San Diego harbour. It is a little bit elevated so there are great views back across the harbour and the city. Also out there are a couple of naval bases and several war cemeteries. You can also see the whole of the North Island Naval Air Station.
A couple of late afternoon shots out of the hotel window.
...I spent 3 months working in San Diego...I found the sailors' hospitality almost overwhelming...
Great city TC but we weren't there long enough to engage with the navy guys. I loved the fact there is a huge number of Australian eucalyptus trees planted throughout it. In fact there are places you could be forgiven for thinking you were in an Australian city. The area near the zoo and Kings Park in Perth are very very similar.
So Monday was zoo day. I must say I was really looking forward to visiting the San Diego Zoo. It has an amazing, perhaps legendary status across the world. Well both the wife and I liked it, but it didn't meet the reputation expectation we had. There was nothing wrong with it, but just didn't hit the mark. At the end we both agreed it had been a worthwhile visit but as far as zoos are concerned, we're done.
As we were driving away from the zoo the wife spotted a large open public rose garden. There was no parking so I let her out and said I'd be back in ten minutes. Easier said than done but ten minutes turned into 25 before she re-appeared. But she was most grateful and I did bank many brownie points.
And just after leaving the rose garden we saw this!
We drove back out to Point Lomo because I wanted to recreate a photo of me from 21 years ago. Back then I was managing an airports technology company based in Denver and spent four days in San Diego at an industry convention. So here are both photos, 21 years and coincidentally, 21 kgs difference.
