    Arizona Times

I was a VP in a large travel company in Phoenix Arizona from June 2016 to end September 2017. The wife joined me in November 2016. During her time with me we did some great trips away to Las Vegas (3 times), Seattle, San Diego, Albuquerque/Santa Fe, Atlanta to New York drive via the Appalachian Mountains, Tuscon, Niagara Falls and a Rockies and Cascade Mountains drive. We took maybe 20,000 photos and I'll likely do some posts on those trips as well.

But this thread will just be about our times in Arizona. Will post in chronological order...hope you don't get too bored. I've selected some 150 photos so will maybe work my way through them over the next couple of weeks. (Trimmed it down by posting the Arizona sunrise and sunset photos in other threads a couple of days ago).

The is the meteor crater at Meteor Crater National Monument a bit to the east of Winslow on I40. I first visited it in the mid-90's when I was living in Denver and it was every bit as impressive as I remembered it. I don't recall the dimensions of it or the meteor but I do remember they estimated it hit the Earth at 17 kilometers a second.
    Arizona Times-img_1019r-jpg

Ahead of the moon landing NASA used the crater bottom to test astronaut and expedition equipment. They left this as a momento although if I was being picky I'd point out the command module was not the vehicle that landed on the moon.

Ran into this burger in an Irish pub in Flagstaff. Don't think I've ever encountered or eaten as much cheese and bacon. Was my inspiration to get Crossroads Nan making me a worthy bacon although I've kept the jalapenos off the Crossroads version.

The view from my room at the resort I stayed for three months before finally getting an apartment in a gated community. Hard to see in this photo but you could just see the top of the mountain behind Flagstaff, just on 100 miles away.

A monsoon sky one afternoon. Phoenix has a pronounced wet/monsoon based season but it only runs for 8-10 weeks. The moisture generally comes off the Gulf of California.

Central Phoenix sort of has two central business districts aligned north/south on North Central Avenue and about 4-5 miles apart. Was bored one weekend and walked from south to the north and back. This street art appears to have been the only things that caught my eye.

I have a suspicion that the first one is Alice Cooper inspired. He is a native of Phoenix and runs a restaurant/bar somewhere in the central city.

A work colleague invited me to go rock climbing using his four wheel drive. We headed into the mountains centered on Crown King, an old mining village. Some of the roads and cliffs we climbed in it were barely believable and apart for one point when we we teetered forward on the locked front wheels when going down a near vertical climb I was fine with it. He told me I was the first person to not want to get out and walk on at least one of the climbs or descents. I took some good videos of what we did but unfortunately only portrait orientated photos so not posting those.

Some photos of the old saloon at Crown King. Like most from the era the upper floor was a brothel and around the back of the building was an enclosed wooden bridge and stairs that the punters would use to enter the brothel and not been seen from the front street.

A view coming back down from the mountains around Crown King. I was sure when we left I17 in the morning we had taken an anti-clockwise route but once we got back to the interstate and were further north than when we left I realized it must have been clockwise. Really confused. Had to use Google Maps that night to work out what we did.
    Arizona Times-img_3124r-jpg

We pulled up here briefly towards the end of the descent out of the mountains. This is a mountain spring fed pond and always has water. The guy I was with told me stories of how much the climate has changed in the area over the last century. What are now dry creeks in the mountains 90% of the time once had flowing water most of the time. In fact he showed me a dry swimming hole that was part of an abandoned resort where Humphrey Bogart used to bonk some actress on the quiet over several years/visits. I suppose we are talking about the 30s/40s.

This was my driver in Phoenix. An interesting guy. Until the 2008 financial crash he was a corporate advisor and used to be flown around the USA in his own aircraft to do business. That all came crashing down but he had enough money left over to move to Phoenix and establish a limo service with a small number of cars and drivers. But he was again doing it tough due to Uber when I used him. He was particularly proud of this car. I've forgotten the make and model but it is now discontinued and this was in the last batch of twenty made, and were a slightly longer stretch than the usual stretch.

Our gated community was surrounded by six holes of an eighteen hole golf course that was part of a resort across the road for us. Was quite nice to walk around the perimeter and occasionally you would get a nice photo.

The wife finally got her spouse visa and joined me in November 2016. Phoenix is the third largest metropolitan city in the USA and is actually comprised of 9-11 separate cites. We lived in Scottsdale in the north. Within Scottsdale our locality was a tiny suburb called Kierland. A little but upmarket but not nearly as much as Paradise Valley about four miles south of us. A ton of celebrities live there including Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac fame who was the neighbour of my driver.

Not long after the wife arrived we did a weekend trip to Las Vegas. Went the long way via Page going there. This is at Page and includes the Colorado River above the Grand Canyon and the dam that creates Lake Powell.
    Arizona Times-img_3391a-jpg

I'm struggling to remember exactly where this is but somewhere near Page. There are a number of large Indian reservations in this and the Four Corners area...Ute, Hopi, Zuni and Navajo. I had been told by work colleagues that they hand make a lot of jewelry and this was a market were genuine items were sold. The wife spend a couple of hundred dollars on some nice stuff (that I've never seen her wear).

On the way back from Las Vegas we used the more direct route #93. Kingman is a natural stopping point and is a classic example of why you should get off the interstate and explore the towns it now bypasses. It is on the old route #66 and there are many of the old motels and some shops/restaurants restored in keeping with the 1950s/60s heydey. More photos of Kingman down the track but here are two sets.

On Christmas Eve we flew from Phoenix to Atlanta. Here are a couple of photos of the White Mountains to the east of Phoenix near the border with New Mexico. It was on this flight about twenty minutes out of Phoenix I looked down and saw a huge white arrow on the ground pointing west and 'PHOENIX" written next to it. Happened too quick to get a photo. Turns out that in the early days of air mail when there were no navigation aids, there were many of these huge concrete arrows and signs placed around the country to help the air mail pilot way find. The area where we were has quite a few because it is close to the high ground of the continental divide and often the pilots would have to fly very low to stay under the cloud. They would fly from arrow to arrow.
