A bit of a geography lesson about Arizona. The top portion of the state is a high plateau that is actually a south west extension of the Colorado Plateau. But of course the Colorado River has cut a little 5,000' deep channel...the Grand Canyon. The bottom half of the state is much lower and generally flat...the Senora Dessert. Between the two is the Rim Country that you ascend when going north to get to the high plateau country. The rim is quite pronounced and spectacular in central Arizona. Towards the west of the state the higher country gently reduces in height to meet the Colorado River that flows down it there. In the east the rim is largely hidden in the White Mountains.

The rim country in central Arizona is wonderful. Fir and pine trees, mild summers, snow in winter, plenty of water, etc. Towns like Showlow and this one Payson attract a lot of snow birds (folks who come to Arizona to get away from the northern winters) and retirees. Showlow in particular is referred to as an above ground cemetery because of the number of retirees. (A saying I think is attributed to the comedian Spike Milligan and his referring to Woy Woy near Sydney.)

Some scenes from Payson which is about a third of the way up the rim.

In this photo we are heading north on #87 towards Winslow. We'd climbed the rim and were on the high plateau when I spotted virga clouds on the horizon. The wife was sleeping so even though I remember we were doing 112 mph (in a Mercedes SUV I think) I used one hand to get the photo on my iPhone. I well remember from my private pilot flying days the need to stay well away from the underside of virga clouds.

    Great thread.

That burger back on the first page looks like a heart attack on a plate. And I want one. The burger that is, not the heart attack.

As best as I can tell Winslow in central north Arizona on I40 exists because of the railway and the need to dump anything other folks don't want somewhere. It is largely without any redeeming features and probably would have died long ago except for The Eagles and the song Take It Easy. There is a line 'standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona'. And that is why there is a tourist attraction in the middle of the town celebrating it.

BIP when you post YouTube vids remove the 's' from the https - i.e. http://www...etc. not https://www...etc.

If you leave it in for some reason it stuffs with the formatting of the thread and will kinda ruin posting your pics (which would be a shame cos they're great).

Took the wife to Meteor Crater National Monument. (See page 1 this thread for a photo of the crater. There will be another a bit later.)
    Arizona Times-img_5756r-jpg

Still at the meteor crater. Here is a wall framing Humphreys Peak about thirty miles away. Just in front and to the south of it is Flagstaff. Pretty sure that mountain is the highest point in Arizona.

We stayed in Flagstaff overnight, a Saturday. We decided to find something local and authentic for breakfast and after some research were camped in a place that had a great coffee reputation and smelt like it. It was grab a table, order/pay at the counter and wait for delivery type of place. It was at this point I noticed a distinct lack of meat on the menu, and certainly no bacon.

So we left and drove to the second ranked place that from the outside looked like a dump. Found it a little east of central Flagstaff on road #89. It was opposite the double track railway and railway themed. In fact running around the wall of the whole restaurant just below the ceiling was a model train. The service and food were old fashioned 1960s style and great. My Denver omelette was presented on a large plate and spilled over both ends. We ate and watched for about an hour. Couldn't believe the number of 2-3 kilometer freight trains coming through in both directions, all with double stacked containers. Gone are the days when these trains travelled at 30-45 mph, they are now doing 50-70 even through towns.

I think we were the only customers in the hour we were there.

After breakfast we headed around to the Arizona Snowbowl, one of three ski resorts in Arizona. (There might be more than three.) It was quite late in the season but plenty of snow around, the first ever time my wife had experienced snow. We eventually found what we wanted and took a ski lift up and back for the views. The wife was thrilled by the experience.

Time to head back to Phoenix on this weekend. Instead of heading south on I17 we diverted on road #89A towards Sedona and the red mountain country. But first we went through the long Oak Creek Canyon. More and better photos of the red mountains near Sedona a bit later.

Another Saturday drive. This time out to Superior and then Globe, both mining towns in central Arizona. Then up to Show Low.

Superior has seen much better days but Globe seems to be almost thriving. It was interesting looking at the style and build of the Globe main street buildings. It was easy to pick those building build as banks 90-120 years ago. Huge grandiose buildings built of stone with walls more than a foot thick. Must have been a lot of money around in those days.

We did a Saturday night staycation at The Phoenician in Paradise Valley one weekend. They were renovating and most of it was closed so rates were a third of normal. These were a couple of views off the breakfast restaurant terrace looking south across east Phoenix. Plenty of trees here and interesting rock formation scattered throughout the city.

Even Phoenix has put in a light rail system. Quite a long system but not yet spreading out across the greater metropolitan area. Does serve the airport though.

Some lantana flowers in our gated community in Scottsdale. When I lived in the Riverina in New South Wales as a kid lantana was a common flower plant. Most are imports from South America and when planted in hot dry climates they stay small bushes and flower a lot. Very pretty and bees like them. But personally I could never like them. In my teenage years on the Northern Rivers of New South Wales you can see what happens when lantana spreads into sub-tropical and temperate regions. Becomes a terrible weed, invades and dominates the edges of forests. Farmers would have to crawl into thickets to get a chain around them and pull collections of plants out using a tractor. Not possible to do that in the hilly and steep forests in the Northern Rivers. Thankfully thick pockets of healthy rainforest would not let lantana get a hold.

Next day we headed to Tucson and the Pima Air and Space Museum. Hundreds of historical private, commercial and military aircraft. My favourite by far was the Convair B-36 Peacemaker that had six piston-powered push propellers and four jet engines. (Apparently the phrase 'six turning and four burning' was invented for this aircraft.) I somehow didn't get a photo of that aircraft. Read up about in on Wikipedia, a truly impressive aircraft.

Thead brings back fond memories for me. As a young sailor fresh out of boot camp rode my brand new 1964 Triumph Bonneville from Chicago to LA. At that time Route 66 towns in Arizona were still thriving. Interstate 40 not yet open in Arizona.

    Here is the beast.

And this is my last photo for this thread. On road #93 between Kingman and Phoenix is a location called 'Nothing', says it on the sign if you look closely enough. One day it is planned for I19 to run from Nogales, through Tuscon, Phoenix, Kingman, Henderson, Las Vegas and go all the way Reno. With an interstate running through it hopefully Nothing can be renamed to Something and get a fresh start.

Looks like several of you enjoyed the thread so I'll press on and do others for the many interstate trips we did. Will kick off with a July 4 long weekend trip to San Diego.
