When the Indians were displaced from the river flats near the resort (well from most of the flat land adjacent the Salt and Gila Rivers) their network of irrigation canals were left to deteriorate and in some cases were actively destroyed. The once fertile land reverted to dessert. In some areas but done particularly well of this resort land they have restored a set of old Indian canals. A true oasis and lovely morning walk.

One of the great things about the USA was the cheap and high quality steak. This was likely about $25 worth and no doubt I ate two for dinner (with a few beers) and left the other for breakfast. Sear them in a bloody hot pan with oil and butter after seasoning with sea salt. Then into a hot over for 12 minutes and another 10 to rest. I like my meat a bit past medium. Took several months to get used to the grain/corn fed flavour.

Looking at the photo again I suspect this lot was BBQ'ed.

I put these two photos together because they are in portrait mode and to post individually they flip onto the side.

On the left in my favourite tee shirt I saw in the USA. We were having breakfast at Perk Eatery in Scottsdale when I spotted it and decided to 'quietly' take a photo.

On the right is a mystery. Was walking across a large car park on a rainy evening with low cloud (300-500 meters above ground) and spotted this stationary shaft of light. It stayed in the same spot while the low cloud was moving right to left. It seemed to be in the cloud. I was and remain utterly perplexed as to what it was. Stayed the same for five minutes before my driver turned up. I've had an extraordinary UFO sighting and was not as confused by it as I was this. A possibility is an aircraft chemtrail refracted sunlight down onto the low cloud...but I'm no scientist or meteorologist.

Heading south from Tuscon down I19 to Nogales on the USA/Mexico border. Notice anything?

This is Nogales on the border with Mexico. Looks like Trump doesn't need to build a wall here.

Main street of Patagonia. Stopped here for a pee and coffee. On this day we went through three border patrol check-points. At each one the agents didn't even get out of their chairs. Just asked where are you from, where are you going and what nationality are you? We had our passports with us just in case but never needed them. Told the wife someone is going to pick her as looking a bit Mexican.

We enjoyed Tombstone. A mix of restored authentic stiff, new stuff done well to pretend to be old and a little bit of new stuff done badly. Didn't stay for the O.K. Corral Show. The Court House was great.

Something we didn't expect to see in Tombstone was the worlds largest rose bush.

Driving on I10 west towards Tuscon and east of Mescal a railway company has parked literally hundreds of old diesel electric locomotives. Very bad photo of it but just amazing. You can actually see them on Google Earth/Maps and I ready an article that said there is something like 300 of them.

Loved the food truck scene in Phoenix. Wasn't a week when there wasn't one at our work for lunch or in our gated community for dinner.

You know you are settling into Arizona life when these landscapes start to look normal and pleasant. The Senora Dessert is quite nice in fact.

Welcome to Wednesday morning. (After typing that I checked it was Wednesday.) Finally a decent sleep after two bad nights.

In the middle of Arizona it is mining country. Think it is mainly copper now, maybe a bit of zinc. After a couple of nights in Tucson we decided to drive back to Phoenix on #77 to Winkelman, then #177 to Superior, then 60 to Phoenix.

This is a miners memorial at Mammoth.

    A refinery at Winkelman.
    Arizona Times-img_5132r-jpg

A rodeo ground next to the Gila River at Winkelman.
    Arizona Times-img_5134r-jpg

The Gila River. Two stories here. In the first there were quite a few flat rocks so I got the wife to crank up her iPhone video and attempted to skip some rocks across the water. Not done that for maybe thirty years. First attempt a mess but second and third were great and the wife got them. Posted them to her Facebook only to have my son commiserate with her for how long she must have stood in the sun to get those two rock skips. No respect.

Second story, on this and the Salt River there are businesses that sell a tire tube float to thousands of people in the months they have sufficient flow. The rivers have sandy bottoms here and the water is generally less than a meter deep. You can do 5, 10 even 20 mile floats down the rivers. In the summer there is another bunch of folks who go out with metal detectors and find the rings, bracelets, watches, etc that these folks lose.

Some street scenes from Winkelman. Not sure the folks in the cemetery are appreciating the mountain view.
