Nice folks lack of generals and army to give direction yet the Ticos are friendly, Huge climate range English friends son runs a zipwire/blloon thingy I'll try find a link, colleage worked in the capital low pay but good culture, helps in the sticks if you speak Spanish, not my mangled mix of scraps of French Basque and Catalan but as you can read everything not hard .

Moros y Christianos with plantains sustains the peasants ,ok once , edibe fodder, nowhere as good as Colombia or Mexico.
If I had only one more Caribean trip I'd go Belize
but can by in English most places as so many tourists retirees, cheap tropical, for women food Thailand for me everytime, If you like colorful Colombia, Brazil , Cuba is ok for rim and cigars awful food , either shabby cheap or International standard International price

    Tastes better than it looks

    Extremely safe
    less gringos
Has Issan feel but very hilly w/ gorgeous waterfalls, jungle...

Well, my place is 30 clicks outside Udorn...lotsa farming families, easy-going, smiley, cheap, variable weather, fresh food, communal, extended families abound.

I dunno Slow paced and laid back, I suppose.

...compared to what's on either side of it, CS is a star: beaches, jungle, polite greenery, stable society and politics and a beautiful accessible mountain range running up the middle of it. If Thailand hadn't offered the promise of unimaginable debauchery, I'd be a gringo in CS now.

Toying with the idea of going there in the spring. The routing seems to be a bitch though. If Qatar would hurry up and be nice to Saudi, I could do most of it in one flight.

i love CA and SA....but interesting article in today's WSJ...

"If you live in Acapulco (or Caracas, Venezuela, or San Salvador) for 70 years, there is a roughly 1-in-10 chance you will get murdered."
