Wasn't there a story about an American English TEACHER who got caned in Thailand a while bacK? (By the headmaster)
^ Yeah, I heard about that story. I think that it happened in front of his students as well.
was it a female, with scanty underwear?
I think there's been a lot of bollocks written in this thread.
Only DJ Pat and myself seem to know the truth.
The only TEFLers who break 40K a month will scarcely see daylight, let alone the outside world.
If they are legal then they are chained to their shitty schools from 7.30 am till 5pm (not to mention all the other crap they have to do outside of those hours like marking and meeting the parents etc).
If they aren't legal then they're to be found charging all over the city from language school sweat shop to language school sweat shop for their 300B an hour.
The teachers I know who break 40K have to pack in some hefty after school hours in their private lessons to make that, while we gainfully employed sexpats are relaxing in the bars and shagging their "Tee Raks".
I must admit that it did, however although he is a prat, he's pretty spot on about expat oddities.
I'm bang on right here though.
^ he may have some insights to a segment of expats, but is incapable of realizing that "expats" in Thailand are far more than TEFLers eeking out a living on the fringes of society.

I don't particularly "value" anyone's opinion, least of all on internet forums.
However as he's never lied to me or cheated me, I have nowt against the bloke and agree with his comments made herein.

Excluding qualified PGCE teachers and those young folk working assignments in a structured gap year or even less motivated, informal gappers looking to replenish travelling money , most English teachers in Thailand are simply doing so as a means of remaining in circumstances not otherwise available to them. A fraction are retirees filling in their time and augmenting a pension but in truth the work ethic is perhaps the greater motivator for them.
Given the pittance they earn, in the main, it is therefore reasonable to conclude that most other teflers are here simply because of the attractions, cheap sex and a low cost of living permitting their vice, and are more than likely to be talentless, shiftless wasters who have no future in their own countries where regular heterosexual activity is probably not a realistic option - many tefling chaps all seem to have something wrong with them and are I should imagine quite unappealing to decent, attractive white women.
There is of course another category of tefler, the predatory sex monster, who is simply here for the classroom pickings not available to his ilk back in the West. Money is not such a priority in his case and he generally will get by happily on a shoestring.
I think that just about sums up tefling in Thailand, doesn't it?
I would say that you may be right for many but not all. It depends what schools you work for. I know that the crappy government schools tend to pay the least. I avoided these. I was not overworked (19 teaching hours a week), had to be there from 8am - 4pm. That was for 50,000. Then with a few privates added in I made up to 80,000 a month. Many of the teachers That I worked with and socialised with were with degree and sometimes tefl/celta.
I would say that there are a number of the people you described in the tefl field in Thailand. However, many are decent teachers, instructors (whatever you want to call them) that do it because they like it. I'd say that it depends on the schools and what their expectations are. Are they happy to employ a type of person that is here just because of the cheap booze and cheap woman. Many of the lower level schools do employ these types. Is that a reflection of the school or the person employed? Personally I wouldn't work at a school like this. I have before, when I arrived to LOS but quickly moved on.
And of course they do like it more because it is in Thailand. Personally once I do a few years of UK teaching I may return to Thailand to teach. Not at the low end tefl business, but at an International school, with some sort of standards. I did my PGCE after 5 years of teaching Tefl in Bangkok. I know others that are going to do a PGCE as well. They are interesting in education and want to be qualified 'proper' teachers. They are probably the good side of the tefl spectrum. But, there are wuite a few of these. And labeling everyone with the one brush clouds the picture. It's like saying that all builders are fat, wolf whistling, simpletons. Maybe some are, but bot all.
On the contrary, I rather thought it to be a measured analysis reflecting the truth as opposed to the veneer of respectability some, and presumably yourself, would prefer.
Frankly, I'm not seeking to scale any moral high ground here. How folk wish to get their rocks off is really a matter for them and to spend one's time whoremongering in an alcoholic haze is probably no worse than any other leisure acitivity. My point was that for many male teflers their primary purpose in pursuing ther career was to subsidise their vices in circumstances not otherwise available.
Why would you think I was trolling?
It's a valid point.Quote:

However I have no beef at all with anyone's choice of lifestyle.
Fair play to them I say.
If that's how they want to spend their monthly pay, then fine, but I just wish they'd stop pretending to be something they're not all the time.
I suppose many bullshit about it because of the piss-taking attitude of people like me, but I have pals who take the piss out of my job, but I'm not ashamed of being the privvy cleaner at Hualamphong.
the trouble with your statement is that you have no idea what "many" isQuote:

The Baht being quite strong now, sex is no longer cheap, unless you think a quickie on the beach with an ugly woman is worth the money
From what I have heard, TEFLing in Thailand does not have so many of those you describe; they now tend to gravitate towards other countries
It's not always about a quickie though but the availability of women.
For most of these lads the attraction is that they know they can easily find a nice "live-in" from the bars and when they get fed up with that one (or vice-versa) they can easily move on to the next then have the odd pop when the chance grabs them.
and you think most of them cannot do that in other countries, or even at home?
No! Or at least not have the same choice they have here...
Oh Quickhandshandy, surely you can't be that clueless???
Why on earth do you think they are here? For the cuisine, the tropical climate, the shitty wages that earn them no pension rights, the fucking scenery or is it the fact they can shag as much 20 year old poontang as they want?
Honestly, just how dumb do you want to be?
The only fucking these boys get a sniff at back in whichever Godforsaken drear grey, drizzle soaked, ghastly UK suburb they come from is with some fat bellied, peroxide blonde, fugly moose on the piss.
"Actually, Kevin, I'm doing a post grad study course on Aramaic Aryan influences on linguistic patterns among the Suay. What brings you here ?"
" Well, Tristram me old mukka, don't know abaht you but ah'm 'ere for the 3 holer and her sister. Know whatta mean or is you a [at][at][at][at]?"
I suppose your experience more nearly parallels theirs, theGents, so you can understand their plight
so yes, I must be dumb and clueless; my experience is such that I have never had any problems finding attractive women wherever I am in the world, so could not sympathise with their plight

Totally but most of it have the readies to poke every night if we so choose to.
I think you're right.
TEFLers are all highly educated and the rest of us are in awe.

Actually, 'handshandy, I was basing my thesis on empirical evidence whereas your apologia seems to be more doctrinal than anything else, like so many of the would be chattering classes who prefer to see the world through their own disorted prism rather than as it actually is. Classifying a discordant view to their own as stereoptypical thinking is, well, typical of their blinkered myopia.
I would hardly call your personal experience and observations a thesis that could have any chance of being provenQuote:
