Most of the rest of Bangkok have started playing 'World Rules'. Ball in hand, a ball must touch a rail during play, call you 8 ball shot and agree with the other person before you start if your gonna call all of the shots or not.

edit: oh, and intentional snookers are perfectly acceptable as long as something connected with a rail. Except in Gulliver's, where they will want to beat you up.:)

i actually think ball in hand is a gay rule, epecially if it is talented players.

Gullivers is "call on the 8" but the asshole called the pocket without saying it was going to go off of one of my balls. I think this duche knew it but was not honest

Socal play by the house rules & read some of the replys.
The guy called which pocket he will pot the black 8 ball, he bang the 8 ball on to your ball & goes in to the pocket he called. ( He wins the game )

When in Dodge play by there rule not yours.

If you want to play for real go to Hustler's, Ball in Hand, Sport's Academy, Players, etc.- most of them have weekly tournaments- Gulliver's is full of shit players who can't hack playing real rules on a 9-foot table.

Snooker is where you find real talent.

Here in Chiang Mai for pool, most bars play the local comp rules - 1 shot ball in hand and call a pocket for the black, doesn't matter what happens as long as the black goes in that pocket.

The gayest thing about these rules is the tap snooker allowed. You can just tap the white behind your ball for an easy snooker. They don't have the rule where any ball must hit a cushion after the white makes contact else it's a foul. Guess it's too complex for everybody to get a hold of, but that's proper comp. 8 ball rules (fuck knows what they play in America but it's weird after listening to yanks whine endlessly about the rules). They're never the same either (different seppos and their version of 'the rules')

2 Shots is easier, let me try to explain it.

If your opponent fouls then you want to clear the table from your turn.

With ball in hand you get what appears in most cases to be an easier first shot, but you've still got to keep your white position to run through the sequence, potting all the balls and finish on the black. You can't make any mistakes.

With 2 shots, you might have a trickier first shot, (not always because there is a chance that you'll have a choice of balls sitting over or around pockets) and then you've got to run through the balls on the table, but you've got one chance to fuck up and make a mistake and you can still carry on.

Which one sounds like a better rule?

^ I find ball in hand much easier. Because you can plot the course of your run out much easier than 2 shot. If you happen to have a nicely placed white and 2 shots then yeah it's better, but more often that's not the case.

There's actually a great bar box (7-foot table) in the Tequila Bar on the Annie's soi- it's made by Sovereign, and it's in really good shape (if you don't feel like walking upstairs to Ball in Hand).

Agree. A broader choice of balls and you can set up angle to get position on next ball.

^ Also, you can more easily get rid of any problem balls. You can also pot the other person's ball if it's blocking yours over a pocket (at least in most ball in hand rule versions you can).

Here's one from just yesterday. I just missed potting the black and it was literally hanging over the edge of the lip of a corner pocket. Opponent snookers me, pusst tap style of course, I get down to play my shot, and the black ball went down before I hit the white. What's the rule there??

I conceded defeat to avoid issues and paid up 20 THB.

The 'ball in hand' rule is not just about being easy- it's about creating a costly penalty for an error, and it's supposed to speed up the game (especially 9-ball) for gambling and tournament purposes- it's been used in 8-ball (the old 'kitchen' rule is being phased out), 9-ball, and 10-ball professional tournaments for years ('Texas Express' rules- if you ever played 'roll-out 9-ball', it's a much different game, and not necessarily better).

I play the 9-ball ghost quite often (that's a way of practicing solo where you take ball in hand after the break)- try that a few times and tell me how often you 'beat the ghost'- it's so easy to get out-of-shape after a couple of shots- it's certainly a big advantage, but it sure isn't a lock, even for a pro.

I think the advantage of ball in hand over 2 shot increases with the skill of the player. For beginners, 2 shot probably would be more advantageous.

"Rule" related to this are all over the map so depends on house rules or as agreed with opponent. Some I have encountered:

Opponent ball can be made anytime without fault. (what you are saying)

You can continue to shoot if you make opponent ball as long as you hit one of yours first.

Making opponent ball no matter how is a foul.

Not saying that, I wasn't clear. I meant only on a foul, in which case you can use make an opponent's ball your own ball for that one shot. Thought that was pretty standard for ball in hand.

I've seen that one too, though usually, and almost universally here in Chiang Mai, you can play the opponent's ball first after a foul. I think that's what the term 'free ball' means.

Any other time you pot an opponent's ball it's a foul.

That does make sense technically. As if the ball never came to a stop, but slowly crept towards the pocket the whole time.

It sucks when the rules say no jump shots. The place I go to most has that rule to protect their tables coz most people don;t know how to jump properly and instead scoop the ball up from underneath, taking the felt with it.

Jump shots are skillfull when executed correctly and should be encouraged.
