I've got nothing against backpackers in general- I just don't like the ones who try to show you the 'nobility' of traveling via the cheapest possible.

Also, you could be standing on the most perfect, virgin stretch of beach that's completely untouched by modern civilization, and some backpacker will show up and tell you that the place is now spoiled and you should have seen it ten years ago.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

If you go over to Khaosan Road these days the sighting of a smelly hippy type is not actually that common....

Most 'backpackers'these days are reasonably clean cut.

Live and Let Live I say, if they are wrong in their opinions of who and what they are so what??

Their ignorance doesn't cause me any harm, why do people get so upset about them?

I'd like to change my errant ways, and offer to carry a backpackers load for a change.

I'll even wear my Sunday best for the occasion

To find some commonality, we'll discuss how much we both despise-

    Bloody tourists!!

Having been informed of the error of my ways, I will then move somewhere nice.

I do notice that my backpack was about half the size those gals are carrying. And I sure didn't carry one on my chest as well. I constantly looked for ways do dump stuff, not get a huge bag and ad more. Did have hiking boots hanging off the pack though.

backpackers, like most groups of people, are not an homogenous bunch

they vary enormously and villifying the whole of them is akin to a form of racism, although safer

Not so much bitter old fucks as the converse.....they are naive selfish young twits. I was unfortunate enough to stay on Khao San Rd a couple of years ago and was highly irritated at the number of European backpackers who would come in after midnight and have loud conversations in the hallway as if they were the only people there....often smoking at the same time. In this particular place there were windows opening on to the hallway from each room for ventilation. They could all see that, but glob knows what was going on in their tiny minds.
When I was a backpacker 20 years ago there were far, far fewer people who would ever do that.

That's not a douchebag backpacker thing, though- that's a douchebag European thing.

Ah yes...."Eurotrash"......what on earth DOES make them tick ?
When woken, I did very politely point out that I was sleeping / trying to breathe fresh air, and they did comply.......albeit looking a little stunned at first.
Like it was the first time they had encountered other peoples' needs, or noticed that others were sleeping.
Perhaps their peers party so hard that once they go to sleep, it's in a coma.

I failed as a backpacker. I got a limo from Don Muang to KSR rather than try to do it on 5 Baht.

I like maneuvering around backpackers at train stations ,airports etc
them with the monster backpack , bow legged and caked in sweat
me lightly pulling my wheeled shoulder bag along with one hand ,and an ice cream in the other .
one of lifes small pleasures ....

Don't mind backpackers. Young people, all wide-eyed and innocent, starting their journey of discovery and education. So they're mostly stupid, but that's young people. We were all like that basically.

    Sweet huh?

Brain development is retarted by the severe assault from their own bodies upon their olfactory system.

I used to meet plenty of backpackers before. As I was once a backpacker myself before getting married.
Met both the good, the bad and the ugly as with any other type of tourist.
But most definitely belonged to the first category.

These days I rarely meet any, places not described in guide books hold little attraction to the majority.
But the ones I do meet are generally widely travelled and have many a good tale to tell. Not to mention some very good recommendations for places to visit.

Times are a`changing. I don`t see backpackers these days as one homogeneous group any more.
Some carry around Haglöff backpacks worth 20.000 baht, add digicams and laptops worth much more to that and with a budget that will allow them to stay just about any where, if they so choose.

Some just prefer to travel like this.

I had a very unpleasant encounter with a backpacker a few years back, but that could just as easily have been with any other tourist.

I was about to embark on a bus ride from Ranong to Bkk.
The staff noticed that my son looked thai and that I spoke thai.
So they invited us to join them on the lower deck of the bus where there was only one couch surrounded by backpacks.
There was just enough space there, so that I could sit up and my son sleep there. We were occupying 1½ seat, reserved for staff.

When we stopped some time during the night to get a bit of grub. 2 young yanks came into our lower deck section of the bus.
"Hey, cant you make your kid sleep on the backpacks? The AC above is foked, and we are drenched in sweat and we would much rather sit here"?

"No, I cannot". "This is staff area and I don`t want my son to sleep like that". "Besides this is december at 3 am, how hot can it possibly be"?

    "You cocksucker"! Was his reply.

"This ain`t Kansas, Dorothy, and besides I thought you were a backpacker"?

That really got him worked up and he wanted to take it outside.
The fok did I want that when travelling with my 5 year old kid.

His buddy and the staff convinced him to leave for his upper deck VIP seats.

I am not sure if I did right. But I am sure that I set the comfort of my son a lot higher than this squeamish backpacker.

    so what is a backpacker?

is it someone who has a backpack, or is it something far more elusive?

    I dunno. I wouldn't call myself a backpacker but I use a backpack instead of a suitcase.
