Thread: Jamaica, whats it like ? Flying there tomorrow.

Jamaica it is.

I am only going for a week by myself. It's not going to be anything like that Mexico trip report cuz I have no friends with me. I am landing in Montego Bay but I want to stay in Negril. I did some research, apparently there is some good bars in the area to pick up women, especially in you're a young hansom man. I have no reservations.

Anyone been there ?

Cheap hotels ?

rent jet skiis ? and bikes ?

The beaches look good. ??

Food ?

I hear some of these baboons are worse then Thai's for ripoffs but I have never had any issues with ripoffs in Thailand anyway.

first of all... are you staying at a resort?

If you are at a resort they will keep you away from the "real" Jamaica..

I rented a big house on the ocean in Port Antonio for a month about 8 years ago and had a great time! Jamaicans are really nice poeple away from the touristy areas...

beaches are nice... food is good and fresh...

Be careful about the ganja... If you are white they will do anything to throw you in jail with some pot.. even though all the locals are smoking it like fucking tabacco! The guy who may sell you some may turn around and tell the local cop for a couple bucks...

and going by yourself??? you might want to stick to the tourist areas and bars... it can get rough off the beaten path! I was lucky to go with a friend who was married to a drug smuggler for like 20 years... he was murdered by Columbians at some point... but his freinds came and took us out almost every night. Lets just say when we walked into a local pub or dance club every damn eye was on us and looked like serius trouble... until... the saw us with these old ganster guys and we instantly had diplomatic immunity!

so have fun... watch your back... and be careful with the ganja..

Im by myself and not going to a resort, i dont even have reservations. Although I want to visit a hedonist resort just to see the train wreak, i heard they are full of old wierd people.

no reservations? damn dude... better get you some! there is a thing called the internets... its a series of tubes... you can get a reservation in Negril... you will be fine there.. very touristy...

go to Boston Beach (home of jamaican jerk) and go to the jerk stand right on the beach.. eat some jerk chicken and red stripe bear all day!!!!

I would also say as far as crime... Jamaicans are probably more deperate that Thais... So keep that in mind...

My brothers have been there 3-4 times each and they have always told me the same as the above about the police shaking you down after the dealers sell to you, and then nod to the police or make a quick call. In fact a cruise liner that is there daily warns it's passengers not to leave the tourist areas that are protected when smoking due to quick nature of the police to make arrests on drug charges outside tourist areas. My brother said the charges are similar to public intoxication if you are smoking on the streets, and since you own no land in Jamaica you need to be very careful about smoking at all. Funny how it is legal yet illegal at the same time in some cases.

Robbery is another very big warning you get if you are heading outside the tourist areas. Muggings are regular occurrences. Be very careful. The snorkeling is said to be some of the finest in the world. While you are there be sure to buy some local coffee, and the rum is like $3USD a 1/5. I like the banana rum if you feel generous.

Been there a couple times, know some people from there that live in South Florida, my suggestion for you (knowing little about you) would be for you to stay on the Kingston (area) side of the island.

Driving through Kingston was freaking scary!!!!! That is a rough city!!!!!

I would stay around Negril.. Its all tourists... He can have a good time without being gutted by a machete!!!

It's full of mericans and kanucks "whooping" it up.

Get to the south and west coasts.

no its full of Jamaicans..... especially Kingston!!!

Stick with the north & west coast you will be fine...

STAY THE HELL OUT OF KINGSTON!!!!!!!!!! UNLESS YOU GOT BACKUP!!!!!

You will usually see them in the club standing and dancing together with other local girls.Many times they will be dancing by themselves. Unlke the hard core hookers these girls will never approach you. They do not want to be thought of as whores. You have to approach them discreately to find out if they are p4p. Compliment one you like on her dancing and offer to buy her a drink. If you want to be with her ask her if she would like to come to your hotel. If she says yes tell her your expectations. If she says no try and get her phone number. You may be successful the next day. These girls have GFE potential. Remember, bargin you can get good prices. Whatever you do don't fall in love.What you do in Negril leave it in Negil. Don't buy her a cell phone or send her western union.
