Monks in B50 Million cars - What are your thoughts?

This picture was taken yesterday in the Kantaralak district of Sisaket province in North Eastern Thailand.

The picture shows the arrival of a famous monk visiting the villagers who have been displaced from the border area because of fighting between Thai and Cambodian troops.

The arrival of the monk got a single line mention in the Nation Newspaper towards the end of an article about the plight of the villagers in the area.

Here is the mention it got in the Nation:
A famous local monk arrived in the afternoon in his new Bt50 million Rolls Royce to provide amulets and words of assurance to the mostly poor villagers.
Here is a link to the story: As the guns roar, feelings harden among border evacuees

No picture was included. So here's one for you.

    What are your, thoughts?

    Rolls Royce.
    Good choice of car.
    The man clearly has taste.
Will the villagers be helping keep it clean for him?

The villagers should feel pretty good seeing their alms being put to such good use... and there was me thinking it was just about rice and a bit of fish.

I met Luang Por Khun in Soi 23 one morning at 6.00am and he arrived in a fleet of Benz (with police escort) after taking a helicopter from Korat.

If I didn't know who he was and I saw him on the street I probably would of given him 50 Baht for a bowl of soup and rice.

Having said that within 10 minutes of his arrival there was probably 100 people standing outside of where we were having our meeting who all wanted a piece of him and his spittle.

A super-star if there ever was one.

Apparently the car was a gift. Who gives a B50 million car to a monk? Surely there are better things to spend the money on than a car?

I don't think he is from the area. I think he's a Bangkokian. The car is registered with a Bangkok plate.

*Edit: Thought the Nation says 'famous local monk' so maybe he is?

Perhaps a better question would be what sort of monk accepts such a gift ?

It is now believed by Thai Buddhists that the quick way to Nirvana is to buy your way there.

If the pope can have a Mercedes then a Buddhist monk should have a Rolls Royce at least.

Thailand is totally crackers as we all know.

My wife's uncle thought nothing of complaining about his 1million baht under table payment to his superior for a higher position in the police force. He was complaining to the family when this superior asked for another 200k. Later, the promotions were announced in the paper, the uncle was not one of them and is now down 1.2 million baht. Fucked, totally fucked!

I believe that on his alms round one morning he ran into a noodle cart owner who had no rice or soy milk left to give....so....what's a noodle cart operator gonna do?

Correct. This seems to involve a lot of: Blessing lottery tickets and sticking gold leaf on fridges and pickups.

    Good thread Noodles.

Thai buddhism is total insanity, perfectly inline with the other facets of society. And, if you mention this 50M baht car to a Thai, maybe even point to Buddha himself as an example of true buddhism, they will think you're insane...
