going native doesnt actually mean you're invovled.
what is thai society nowadays? in the city - its shopping, and malls and cars and parties and clubs and cafes - dont have to learn the language to mix in....
in fact I found a certain element of society (hiso and hiso wannabes) actually disliked farang speaking (or attempting) to speak thai. (maybe something to do with the percieved fact that most farang learn to speak thai from bargirls and hookers.... !?
I have reached all the goals I have set for myself so far so I wouldn't class myself as a loser.
Being able to speak the lingo or not is no indication of one's motives.Quote:
I think that people who live in Thailand just for what they can suck out of it, rather than becoming involved in the society (which would include learning the language) suck.
Yet another "Smeg argument" wasting bandwidth and O2.
a great man once sang......
Every loser wins, once the dream begins
In time we'll see, fate holds the key
And every loser knows, the light eternal shows
Will shine on you, and all those who knew
We nearly made it
.....sometimes I pray
but I'am a atheist and have no God
I pray and say "Thank You"
thank you for living
thank you for this great life
whoever is responsible.....
Does that answer your question?
Two kinds of people in this world,
Winners, Losers.
I lost my power in this world,
Because I did not
Use it.
(Lindsey Buckingham)
^isn't that one of the women from Fleetwood Mac?
No, Lindsay Buckingham is the hot guy from Fleetwood Mac.
ok it's a guy - but I got the band right.

no more drunken posts I promise
I am a loser. I have lost 30 pounds on the South Beach Diet. :)
I do think as a foreigner you whould know something about your surroundings ie the language, culture etc. I aint going to say i agree with Smeg because its impossible but he does have a point.
Also i defo dont think i am a loser, i am young, own alot of stuff, have some very good friends, a loving family and wake up with a smile each day so its all good.
Oh and my missus is fit
:bunny3:

However, the overall evaluation can only be made on one's deathbed, if one manages to retain one's marbles to that point in life.
I'm a twat. Does that count?
^Well, I've seen a horse count, so maybe;)
I wish I hadn't started this thead
I wish I hadn't finished that curry
CE, how about a life update instead?
I think everyone agrees that most expats in Thailand are fuck ups... I just think I am an exception... but i suppose everyone does....
MD, you wouldn't stay if you thought it was fucking you up. However, you or anyone isn't in a great position to notice or assess the longterm effects the place has on themself, especially psychologically.
It's free. Use the money to buy yourself a life instead.
No I am mean the people who come here are already fucked up. I have no idea if Thailand makes them worse. I saw this shirtless, dribbling, mumbling farang loitering in a womens' clothes shop in Fashion Island near Pan Tip a few weeks ago. It was 11am for focks sake! Was he fucked up before he came here or did Thailand fuck him up? Who cares... Go to the "beer garden" at NaNa man it is a fucking ghoulish freak show.
