    Some utilise commas thus:

Yes. Two commas, to pick out a phrase, in the middle of a sentence. No problem with that.

??? Do you mean: There is English, and there are mistakes.

It's a straightforward compound sentence - S+V+I, C S+V+I; the comma before the conjunction separates two clauses in a perfectly standard way.

Those 'little thoughts' are called non-defining relative clauses.

Your comment is, as is your wont, completely irrelevant because there are no relative clauses in the sentence.

Betty is correct. There is nothing wrong with the comma placement in that meme.

Similar grammar question to a previous one I had.

When I was learning English I believe I was told that there shouldn't be a comma before the word 'and'.

Is that correct? I believe it was a called a 'connective' word or similar. Bindewort or mot conjonctiv.

It was indeed taught to me that way many decades ago, I think it was one of those aspiring middle class things from that era. I got over it. There is in fact no absolute rule about it and there never was so far as I know. My original post was a piece of whimsy. I am not going to die in a ditch over a comma.
That said, I do prefer not to use a stop with 'and' in a short sentence. They don't sit well side by side. Longer sentences and lists with Oxford commas feel different. I don't know why, possibly someone can tell us.
To me, it is like wearing brown shoes with a dark business suit. Young people do it, there is no law against it, but I don't want to do it.

No the Oxford comma is a very specific comma used in a series:

Please bring me a pencil, eraser, and notebook.

The comma after eraser is an Oxford comma.
