It's a straightforward compound sentence - S+V+I, C S+V+I; the comma before the conjunction separates two clauses in a perfectly standard way.

It was indeed taught to me that way many decades ago, I think it was one of those aspiring middle class things from that era. I got over it. There is in fact no absolute rule about it and there never was so far as I know. My original post was a piece of whimsy. I am not going to die in a ditch over a comma.
That said, I do prefer not to use a stop with 'and' in a short sentence. They don't sit well side by side. Longer sentences and lists with Oxford commas feel different. I don't know why, possibly someone can tell us.
To me, it is like wearing brown shoes with a dark business suit. Young people do it, there is no law against it, but I don't want to do it.
