    Salton Sea.
all about how an engineering mishap created a massive inland sea and then they tried to turn it into a tourist resort, which worked for a while but then the increase in saline levels made the fish life die and the air almost unbreathable.

Not abandoned, but a former performance theater converted into parking lot

Some of their architecture was probably once so beautiful. There are a couple of buildings that are visible when you cross over via the Ambassador Bridge that are beautiful from afar but clearly completely abandoned from up close. Windows are smashed out, the exteriors are in need of repair. I think the one is particular is the Michigan Central Station. And these aren't small, these are buildings that would dominate the sky line in a lot of cities.

The place takes on creepy vibes and freaks people out. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and ripped the heart of fun and the amusement out of this park. Almost six years later, Six Flags in New Orleans is unnaturally silent, no lines and no laughter. This 140-acre surreal setting has morphed into a nightmarish land of twisted dreams. It seems as if the post-apocalyptic atmosphere might be the perfect place to make a zombie movie. As if lured by a distant echo of scattered screams and the ghost of good times, urban explorers venture out of curiosity and capture the moments and crumbling scenes. They share with us in a virtual urban exploration tour of this creepy abandoned amusement park – Six Flags New Orleans. Most of these photos are very recent, as in taken during 2011, nearly six years after Hurricane Katrina tried to swallow New Orleans and Six Flags. A special thank you to the urban explorers who risked arrest, and possible zombie attack, to go in and shoot these current shots of Six Flags, and then gave us permission to use their copyright photos. This is about twice the size of a normal post here, so we hope you really enjoy this virtual urban exploration tour into the defunct amusement park Six Flags New Orleans. [75 Photos]

Wittenoom in Australia used to be an asbestos mining town. The government advised everyone to leave and cut all services to the town

    The Wittenoom Tragedy
The CSR mining and milling of blue asbestos at Wittenoom, Western Australia, is the greatest industrial disaster in Australia and is comparable to similar catastrophes such as Bhopal, Seveso and Minamato.
At Wittenoom thousands of workers and their families, visitors, tourists, consultants and Government officials were exposed to lethal levels of blue asbestos a thousand times higher than occupationally regulated at the time.

Mr Lang Hancock commenced mining blue asbestos at Wittenoom in 1938. However due to the war, there was a shortage of asbestos fibre imports which was used in the asbestos manufacturing industry. Thus in 1943 CSR purchased the Wittenoom mining operations from Mr Hancock and his partners and CSR became one of the major miners and manufacturers of asbestos products in Australia.

I was traveling around that area a month Ago. All references on maps have been removed years ago.

Abandoned terminal, San Francisco: Commercial airports are so vast that, occasionally, entire terminals are deserted despite ongoing airport operations. These eerie images of Terminal 2 at San Francisco International Airport are the exact opposite of the usual chaos and hustle that characterise such places. Terminal 2 was closed for renovation in 2000, but it wasn’t until 2008 that a $383 million upgrade was announced, adopting green materials, that will see it reopen in spring 2011 as a 14 gate base for Virgin America and American Airlines. In its current state, it resembles the silent shopping centres reported in our Dead Malls feature.

Look at this American school. The last school year was in 2008 and it looks worse than Chernobyl.

Old Pinfarina factory in Italy. The last car it produced was the 2008 Alpha Romeo Brera. Unreal the amount of capital and equipment it takes to mfg cars.
