    NTSC and the licensing bung

Interesting to see CAT Telecom and Telephone Organisation of Thailand both litigating against NTSC (headed by a Colonel) for the latter's attempt to conduct a 3G licensing auction next week, claiming the NTSC is unauthorised to do so.

Mindful that the bureaucracy of Thailand get a lot of cash from peddling licenses, that goes straight into their own pockets, it will be a story to follow, and see how far the infighting goes publicly before they are made to close ranks (i.e. not shit too much on their own doorstep).

The only reason why they are trying to stop the auction is the competition against their own services.
CAT's CDMA net is not a great success for them from telephony point of view but they are alone in being able to deliver 1-2MBit internet services on a cell network.
GSM 3G will deliver higher speeds and is a direct competition against CAT's CDMA network and ToT's ADSL internet.
The licensing of 3G is already 3-4 years delayed and every additional month of delay will benefit CAT and ToT.
