Good to hear from you DD. I was actually expecting you to pop in earlier. Never mind "better late than never". What do you suggest DD? Could you give some tips and advice please.

What about focusing on the eskimo market, handy tips for finding ice fishing holes in the korat, seal blubber suppliers in Chaing Mai that sort of thing. Ok mabye a bit of a niche market, but lots of room for growth
A market follower, if not a leader, would be ok but a nicher ......... forget it. :)
If you don't find a niche to fill you're just lookin at a huge undertaking at first, Plan the website around a niche that is not filled bu SE Asian expat/travel sites already, once you've established that toe-hold expand your target.
It's gonna be tough, but with good promotion you can get some traffic and build on that.
^ Thanks very much frankie. I was anxiously looking forward for you to come up with something. Thanks mate I'll keep that in mind.
Ah one more thing frankie. Speaking of travelling plus teaching website, there already is a market leader and a follower who're covering almost all aspects of travelling and teaching. A nich market would be low cost housings / accomodations?
Can you expand a bit more on niche market please?
Thanks in advance.
Macha, if I were to take the time to research, and find, an SEA niche, I would probably exploit it myself. :)
This is really the key to getting a startup site going unless you've got money for promotion or are partnered with another highly visible site. The basic concept: what information do you think is missing from other SEA sites? Can you provide this information?
Form your own opinion: even more specific, what knowledge do you have that could be of value, something you've got specific knowledge about would be easier to get off the ground.I know you've done alot of work; this is really the sort fo thing you need to be thinking about when you first start thinking about a website.
Identifying a niche; a service, information or product that is not readily available on the net then exploiting it for a general information site on Thailand and SE Asia you've got a healthy community of competition, I'd be looking at them trying to identify what they are missing, THEN establish if this is something people want.
There are tools available that will allow you to research websearches agains Google and Yahoo (maybe MSN, I've not seenthem) try and find out what people are searching for, what has a low number of competitive sites.
I wouldn't go for a forum as the main item, but a question and answer part to the site would be bonus; might even get the SE's coming back to read & index the pages often.
An exploitable niche is something always in the back of my mind and every once in a while (time permitting) I'llcome across something that I think is worth researching, I'm really so busy working on other sites, most of what I find gets a day or two every month :D
I've got a couple (NOT SEA) in the works, and I ain't sharin' ;)
Thanks very much for the info frankie. I appreciate your input mate.
One thing I want to mention that the forum's a part of the website. Most of the info will be up on the website where as the forum would further discuss those info. Obviously, I'll be needing help from the posters because withouht the posters the fourm ain't no good.
mate - have a think about it....
dont u think its been done before already??
what are you going to offer that is different or new to the average reader?
lets try a quick google search shall we...?
holy crap - over 5 million hits!Quote:
^ You're right King. The website would contain detailed information on places to stay (apartments, condos, guest houses and hotels) covering the low budget places as well as the higher end of the market. I think it's hard to find such detailed info on the net (well I'll try googling). It will also give detailed info on places to eat / shopping. Apart from that all visa issues are presented in a conventional way on the websites. I have a plan to take a step further by giving information on what if you change your visa from one type to another. How to get it done, what documents are needed, what offices you must go to in order to get it done etc.
A step further in travelling section would be giving info on the places that has not yet been discovered by many travellers. Speaking of the teaching part, the website would contain info on the western teaching techniques / approaches which teachers adopt while teaching in Asia. It will also contain info on how Asian students learn and what approaches should be adopted.
Actually, I'm not worried about the teaching section as one of my friends has been working with an Int'l school in Bangkok for years. He's got a lot of info on the subject.
P.S: King mate, I'm happy to see you and others giving suggestion on the subject. This input will certainly help me and before launching the website I'll correct few things as per posters suggestions.
yawn. have you not heard of the various chamber of commerce ? each of which has their own websites, regular meetings, special meetings, presentations, advice, contacts etc etc.
for a smart fella - you sometimes not really clued on are you?
maybe the 'best they can do is teach' is the people who cannot think outside the concept that the only jobs farang can do in thailand is teach.
^ Thanks very much for all the help mate.
I did not mean that segment at all - it has itself all very well sown up, back-patting & self-feeding - OldBoy structures.
There are many, many westerners who find themselves in S.E.Asia for any number of reasons. Many are on the skids, but some stabilise & need to climb up again. They generally have no contacts whatsoever & would most definitely not be directly accepted into the 'oldboy' structures you refer to.
Many International projects seem to be happening in & around Asia at present - I get a few emails every day.
A rallying-point for many of the expats who either live, or pass through here could be a very useful resource. Perhaps after a few years of getting their respective acts together, who knows, the 'oldboy' structures could even accept them back...
I've often come across decent falangs who become trapped in teaching English, because they need to make a buck. Once they are in, the pay is so low that they end up chasing their tails from am to late pm & never have time to look for a decent position. They get caught in the Teacher Trap.
Anyway, if no-one picks up on this idea, then I'm happy to explore this concept in terms of my networks & through a few Thai contacts. I just don't have time to build & maintain the website itself. No problem in reviewing & supporting such a site.
So, Macha, if you're not too keen (give yourself time to think), I'd be happy to hear from other folks who could be interested in collaborating on kicking such a venture into gear. (Send a pm - I don't want to hog Macha's thread).
Hey man! There's lotsa "ol' boys" holding down a barstool too, ya know! we got our own networks. ESPN and uh...Quote:

and some of this, lots of hit you'll get...
for the travelers, you will have to figth against
Meier's guide Germany, lonely planet and guide du routard wich are among the most popular, all of them have hardcopy books, websits, forums and the travelers believe in it and do not go aside...
I see sometimes tourist passing near me, they'll ask for where is this place showing me the book and i'll tell there but that place is crap comparedto this one new cheap clean closer...most of them still stick to the book.... so the can later on say i was there....
So if you succeed, they'll not go elsewhere then you advise...
