    Double Pricing

Whilst farang are often charged more than Thais, there are many things that work in our favour. I am let off by traffic police all the time, for example, especially with my little one in the car. I can get discount that Thais wouldn't have the nerve to ask for, and better service in shops. Bank workers go out of their way to help me. I don't lose face very easily, which enables me to get away with a lot more than my Thai brothers and sisters.

People remember me which used to be a bad thing when I was a 'naughty boy' Now it is an advantage. Thai people are not all after money(anymore than foreigners) and the longer I live out of Bangkok/tourist areas, I realise this.

I hate to hear the farang saying, "they can't do this to me, do you know what would happen in United Farangland if they did this?". Quite simply, I have started a new life in a country, which will never accept me as one of them, even if I pass a degree in Thai, become a monk, or have Toxin's daughter as a "mia noi".

I have to chill out and adjust certain ideas and attitudes. I must remember that this is not my home country, and therefore has different ways of doing things. Christ, that is one of the reasons I love it here. I used to want them to keep doing the things I liked and stop doing the things I didn't like. What a shity attitude!

Realise what I can change and what I can't. Don't let the things that you can't get on top of you, they're not worth it. Once you have done this, weigh up the pros and cons of living in a new land and decide if it is for me or not. I have not been sentenced to live in Thailand, it is my choice.

Some things like double pricing are the Thai way an I sometimes think I should simply respect their decision - when I do this I usually see that they have a valid reason for doing something that thought 'racist' or unfair.

It's my fear of being take advantage of that I have to address. "can't have them Thais getting the better of ME, the almighty!

I know that if I want to become a Thai citizen I can, but when I weigh up all the pros and cons, I would rather keep my British passport.

Once you've seen one temple, you've seen them all anyway.

    CD

    quite true.

recently having trouble with my satellite company, usually the missus sorts out service personal etc, but she was having trouble, I wrote one letter to the complaints department, cc's Bangkok Post. And guess what the very next day we had 2 emails, 3 phone calls and 2 technicians turned up to sort it all out.

The missus replied to me sometimes they only listen to farang (and are scared of them)

Careful that no bitter little failures start calling you a "Thaiophile" or something equally risible.

    Nice perspective check OP.

I pretty much agree. If you are not acting like an ass, people generally will treat you with a degree of respect. If you have made some attempt to learn the language, rather than laugh at your mispronunciations, they will try to assist. I have found this to be true almost everywhere I have lived over the years - treat them with respect, and they will do the same to you. The only exception was the two years I spent in Saudi, where Saudis had absolutely no interest in knowing you, or anything about you, your culture, etc. But, that's a different thread.

The only pricing situation here which ruffles my feathers is the stupid national park fee for foreigners, which 20 times the Thai entry fee.

Outside of that you can get away with murder here, literally! (for a price of course)

Having a Thai driving licence helps when entering National Parks. Producing the document has assisted me in paying the native admission fee. One official even waved it majestically to others in the queue, why? i have no idea but thought it was quite funny at the time.

^They are useful. When returning to the Philippines from Thailand last time, the girl at the Thai Air counter asked me to show an onward ticket out of the Philippines before issuing my boarding pass. I showed her my Philippine driver's license, and she waved me through without further comment.

Done that. Sober, in front of hundreds of kids at some charity event in Maptaphut, Rayong.
One of the most terrifying experiences of my life, tbh.

20 times? Then you were robbed.

List here of National Park prices: National Park of Thailand, Online Reservation National Park of Thailand, Forest Park of Thailand, Thailand National Park, Thailand Forest Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department, Royal Forest Department

My nearest, PangSida 200 baht for foreigners - this was clearly signposted. Not an issue, I knew what to expect. And 200 was a bargain for a full day out.

We visited a conservation area on Friday, I expected to be charged similarly, ranger with his little ticket booth etc, but only fee was 20 baht each, plus 10 for taking a vehicle in. Granted, it was Friday, but at 1pm we were his first 'customers' of the day, we left around 4 and didn't see anyone else during that time, they're not exactly raking it in.

KL has the same - try the zoo, aqaurium, bird park, butterfly park etc - all double or more for non-Malaysians.

Done that many times with no problem. Although at my wedding 10 years ago I did feel somewhat uneasy and couldn't say what I wanted to.
    Sung a few sings too.

Thailand is racist. It's a fact but as you said that racism sometimes benefits you. There are two sides to every coin as they say. My feelings on things here flip flop all the time. Foreigners are guests here so just enjoy and accept. Putting your western morality and ideas of law aside is a good thing. In fact, sometimes being corrupt pays off in Thailand. I know a lot of people who have cashed up hungry Thai hands and got visas, Plenty start businesses doing things the 'Thai way.' it's just the way it is.

There's another thread on here about Amart and Prai. That's the way it is too. How many Thai servants have brought you coffee? How many have waiied you because well, you're the man and obviously they aren't. Yes, there are many good things about Thai ways and if you think of them rather than when you are on the bad side of the experience, you will find happiness here too.

Me too since I got one of these stickers

It's some kinda military sticker that my wifes auntie got for me. I'd heard about them before and when I got the car I asked her to get me one. From nearly all angles its invisible (it took me five shot attempts to take the pic) but when the car is coming towards you the reflective gold color springs out and flashes your eyes.

I haven't been pulled once since I put it in the window. In fact a couple of days ago I was doing a completely illegal U-turn where it was clearly sign posted "No U-Turns", There seemed to be no fuzz about so I thought fuck it. Then as I was waiting for a gap in traffic a bobby popped out of no where, walked into the middle of the road, stopped the on coming traffic and waived me through on my way.

When I asked for it I thought they were military issue only but when she gave it to me it had a 10BT sticker on the back so you must be able to buy them at the military shops

I wonder if a TD sticker in gold at the front of your car would get you the salutes.

Wouldn't it be even funnier if he was silently communicating with the Thais in the queue "Hey .. look at this! Another tight arsed Farang has managed to slip through the net!. Second one this month!"

Indonesia also charges a lot extra for farangs to get into such places as Borobodur. I had been there a couple of times when I was escorted out of the farang queue, and told that as I worked and lived in the country, I only had to pay the local's fee.

Getting a Thai driving licence sounds good: is it difficult to obtain?

Whilst waiting an hour to do my driving test .. and watching the incompetent Thais doing theirs .. scraping gutters, bumping into cones and other comical stunts .. and passing! ... I'd have to say "No"

Some enterprising Thai ought to get that section of the constitution printed on T-Shirts .. and flog them to punters in Pattaya ..

EDIT .. At an overly inflated price of course! ..
