Rice. We don't grow any ourselves, but various cousins and aunties do- and we feed them regularly. It would be a major loss of face for us to have to buy plain rice. It's kind of nice to know where your rice was grown, and by whom. It's nice too that this staple of life is not a cash transaction, in our case. And our rice is tastier anyway. Better for you too, I wager.

We do have to buy sticky rice though, or barter for it.

Sharks' Fin soup. Utter waste. Fucking up a whole marine eco-system by"finning" sharks just to make a tasteless soup for equally tasteless, ostentatious wankers.

Oxtail Soup. I'm hedging my bets that the harvesting of ox's tails is equally wasteful and cruel.

I agree. Some of my SIL's land is where the town sewage water runs to when we are moderately flooded. So come harvest time, I hit the potatoes.
At least I don't know how they were grown

Its just the usual explotation of the land for money and in this case its not at all necessary.

I completly agree with you, i haven't eaten in my favorite chinese resturant in Brighton for 3 years as they will not take it off the menu. My group of friends have joined me in a mini boycott but to no avail so far.

So I suppose you think it would just be better to kill the whole shark then ?

You realize the shark dies a slow, lingering death once its fin is removed, right...?

Cutting its fins off and tossing it back does kill it, it can't swim properly without them and it also consigns the shark to a slow and probably painful death.

If animals are going to be caught and eaten we should attempt to make use of all of it, not just some appendage that has mythical chinese bullshit medical/aphrodisiac properties imho.

Shark body meat is tasty (try a nice grilled shark steak with a mango, chilli, ginger and cilantro salsa on a beach sometime!) and shark skin is a useful tool. Lopping off the fins and throwing them back into the water to die is a horrible, barbaric practice that should be banned.

Then you've got 'blood diamonds'- money off the diamond industry finances a lot of civil war and assorted violence. Most often, you don't know where the diamond you buy comes from. Coloured gemstones, no problem. I think they look better anyway.
It's why I exclusively prefer synthetic (also known as 'cultured') Diamonds, that are human made, and in my opinion represent something far more precious that 'natural' diamonds.

Same reason why I prefer titanium, to stuff like gold or noble metals, but I digress...

Do you mean 'use' the whole shark? Yes, probably better than just cutting the poor fukcers' fins off so it sinks to the seabed and dies.
Sharks are also "by-catch" meaning they are caught during fishing for other species, therefore no data exists about how many are being caught. Numbers are thought to be getting low already.

I was joking about ox's tails, btw.

There's a whole slew of other animals these fuckers kill, just for a single part, that alleges given them the usual -- aphrodisiac properties, or impotence treatment.

I'd suggest herding up the hunters, and the customers, cutting off their tender parts, and throwing them into the sea - let's see what happens. Videotape the whole carnage, and the rebroadcast and website membership fees alone will make you rich. Everyone wins.

The only animal that the Chinese seem to revere for other than body-part usage is the Giant Panda.
Someone should maybe go lop Lin Ping's paws off and make some soup out of them?

Good point - if I didn't like animals that much, I would be interested to see how the Chinese would react to having their beloved Panda's AK47'd.

I bet they would go apeshit -- while chewing on penguin beak, and grizzly snout (left snout only has magical properties).

Could make ashtrays out of them, they used to do that with gorilla hands in Congo not so long ago, not sure they still do now though.
