    Obscure Thai Driving/Road rules

List any you know about...I learnt this one the other day...

In reverse...no matter what some other brain dead retard might do behind you....NO MATTER WHAT...understand ?? .....you are in the wrong if you hit someone, or something.

So, if you are reversing and some brain dead fucking retard pulls in behind you at 90 degrees and stops and watches you reversing and does not move and watches you hit them.....you are in the wrong.....even if they stink of whiskey and have bloodshot eyes.

    You are in the wrong.
I like poisoning my neighbours dogs till they die cos I'm a cnut

Not allowed to look over your shoulder either. You must only use the mirrors. Same applies to a lane change, there is no blind spot in a side view mirror.

Really...did not know that one. So me arguing i was actually looking back rather than the mirrors worked against me....crikey.

The missus said that if you hit a motorbike with kids on it...you are wrong. Is this correct, even if they veer out onto the road like they do without looking ?

Also elephatnt have right of way apparently....every time.

Guy being sued over on ajarn. His crime two drunk 13 year olds clipped him on a motorbike, they fell off and got hurt. Now he is being sued twice for 500,000 baht.
Even though he was not in the wrong and they are not of legal age. The case has been accepted for trial. Krazy.

I once had a guy under-take me (on the road verge) and his side-mirror hit the side of my brand new car, leaving a sratch all up the side. He then tried to continue on so I chased him. After doing everything he could to try and shake me (indicating one way cutting the other, swerving from lane-to-lane) he finally clicked I wasn't going to quit so pulled over to the side of the road. I pulled in behind him upon which he jammed on his brakes and I slid into the back of him.

    That was my fault, apparently.

His lawyer is saying just go along with it we will win. But I would not want that hanging over my head. How can unlicensed driver be in the right in any way?

Not exactly a road rule, but I was told if another car flashes me (if I'm waiting to pull out) it means don't go???

I would assume so. It means if you pull out we crash because I was taught how to do the lights but not apply the brake.

Hazard warning blinkers are used to indicate you are going straight at a way intersection.

This country is not what you know, but who you know. That's how things are dealt with.

If one is fully covered with motor insurance then let the company deal with the collision damage/injury. No requirement for the driver to get personaly involved other than making a witness statement and producing documents.

If one phones the Insurance company at the time of the incident they will normally send a representive immediately to the scene especially when injuries are involved.

I sometimes think we worry too much about what will occur following a collision. Are we personally liable? Maybe, but only if one doesn't have full insurance cover!

A well known story in Soi 4 in Bangkok is about one of the lads from that area was driving his motor bike through a narrow sub soi with cars parked on either side and a Thai male ran out in front of him.

They collided, the Thai male was killed and the farang broke his colorbone, suffered head injuries and ruptured his spleen.

Whilst in hospital he was accosted not only from the dead guy's family but by the police so he asked for a private investigator to question any witnesses.

As already reported to the police the guy who died had just robbed a shop, was making his escape by fleeing out onto a soi and was hit by this guy.

Apparently none of the eye witness reports mattered and the farang was charged with manslaughter (he was not drunk nor speeding) fined and had to pay 500k to the robbing bastard's family.

He met with them after leaving hospital, threw all the money at their feet and told them to get fvcked, packed his bags and vowed never to return to the Land of Smiles.

I've found insurance coverage here pretty easy to deal with. Following the accident I mentioned above I had a conversation with the assessor that went something like this:

Insurance guy: Right that's the paperwork finished, now I just need your Thai driving licence.
Me: ... Err, what if I don't have one?
Insurance guy: Do you have any licence?
Me: Yes, New Zealand... But I've lost it (the actual physical licence).
Insurance guy: Can you get a replacement?
    Me: Yep, about 2 weeks.
Insurance guy: No problem, just give it to me when you have it.
    Me:

flashing your head lights in the UK is also supposed to only be used as a warning, it isn't supposed to be for letting people pull out.

You see, you're a prime example of not what you know, but whom you'd like to know. Getting to know who's who on here will lift your level of cyber security. But you only have a few hundred post. Might not be quite there yet but keep plodding along.
