Ask them if they understand what democracy is? Ask them if they can even write their name! I grew up with these people, majority of them don't even go to primary school. It hard for you to understand their minds when you come from the developed country and know so much and take it for granted. These people really understand nothing. They don't even know they are being used as a tool in negotiations. They don't even know they are being held to ransom basically.
The BBC know fuck all about it. All they talk about is democracy as if these people are like British Labour Party voter. They say nothing about Toxic. Toxic = Taksin.
It seems to me that the real idiots are the poor ones throwing molotov cocktails and at the other end of the scale, the elite/powers that be.

I feel sorry for the enlightened Thais in the middle. At the end of the day there's good people everywhere, and good people generally are not interested in power. Good friends, good food and good beer is sufficient.

Think you are pretty close here.

Gangsters with a cause. Most are a lot that could care less about political reform but would rather have a good piss up and cause mayhem in the streets.

They'll soon tire of the game and stop. Hardly a civil war.

From what i see the Red Shirts have a perfectly justifiable cause. You dont need a degree in poitical science to know when you are poorer than you should be while too few people in a country holds too much of the wealth and none of it seams to be getting filtered down.
Sure many Red Shirts are uneducated and thats just the way the Bangkok elite likes them.
I understand from your point of view, typical western opinions.

I understand that Taksin threw his money around giving money to the poor and told that's a fair democracy, my family got some of his money during his first election 2001. I understand that he gave hope to the bottom down of the society and that was two third of the country. I do sick of the poorest being ignored governmet after goverment. It's entirely right if they were to make their voice heard. BUT this protest isn't about justice for the poor themselves, but Taksin. The poor as poor as I ever been, would do anything for money, democracy do not put food on the table, and as far as they concern, Taksin gave them some of that, which is good. BUT, what he gain from sqeezing out the poor is far mover than he gave, it's unforgivable.

My experience is that if you're set out to look for job, making money, there's never shortage of jobs. It always work for those who want it.

as for "poorer than you should be" ...they only "should be" not poor if they get off their arse and make some money or get some education.
There is 9 years of free education in thailand, and it's being extended to 12 years (not because of Taksin, it been done before him). These red shirts just want easy money, they are the same people as wearing tracksuit and claiming benefit in uk and endless reasons why they cannot get a job, why they couldn't work.

The government has given them money and they piss it all away on rubbish, because they have no education. My experience of UK is pretty similar - your government gives money to uneducated lazy generation who go and spend it on beer and Argos tv.

My goverment gives money to people who are left in a vunerable position through economic mishaps or ill health. There are some no gooders but most of the people claiming benefits genuinally need them regardless of what the right wing media say.
In Thailand the kids get 9 years of free education. If the parents cant afford to continue their childrens education they have to leave and find a job. What kind of job can they get after 9 years education. Low paid factory work, farm labour all of which keeps them in the cycle of never ending poverty.
No matter what country you live in if people dont stand up and fight they will always lose.

I have to be, I work hard, and I was poor and still poor,

I am not bitter, the reds are bitter. I am not part of them or government, or any colour shirt (calm down), I don't think like them (if they can think at all) I am just annoyed that so many foreigners and foreign journalist who don't understand the reality of Thailand dominate the debate, trying to justify the actions of people they don't understand based on their own western culture.
Maybe it seems only bitter if people are being rewarded and praised for doing the wrong thing, and punished for doing the right thing and criticised for saying that they are doing the wrong thing.

If I am in Thailand, I will be naked to work - all Thai women should protest like this (you know you dream it! hehehe)

"Scottish Gary" to your latest statement

I didn't say the poor shouldn't make their voice heard. If they go out there protest about corruption, ill-bureaucrats, and lack of the rule of law, then yes, I'll support them totally.
There are plenty of helps given out to the poor, but it's being creamed off by those who are in charged of, very little get to the most needed. This fact contributed to the poor cycle too.

Here is part of my life; My family was the poorest in the village, I often bullied by my peers, somehow, I was the first and only one in the village went on to get to uni. I knew a lot of my friend couldn't make it, not because they're poor but the will to better themselves isn't there. They went out to Pattaya, became a bar girl, earned easy money, whilst I work after uni. hour selling fruits on the street supporting myself. I'm not saying i am better than those, but some attitudes 7 mentality here you have to get it right, also, i didn't mean going on to a higher education is the only way to better yourself, I've got cousins didn't finished their primary school because their mum pass away when they were so young, and their alcoholic dad couldn't feed them properly. Them both went out to the city, worked from being a housekeeper/ slave of the rich, until now having a proper career, and enjoying their lives.

We're a long way from civil war. Theres only a chance of that happening if civil insurrection continues unabated, and a couple of provincial army regiments mutiny as well.

The current chaos seems to be dying down, we'll see what tonight brings. No one can change the fact of the governments hamfisted handling of this crisis now, neither the destructive reaction to it by some of the Reds. The best thing the government can do is press on with it's 'Roadmap' and keep the people of Thailand informed. The announcement by Abhisit's Secretary General today to this effect was encouraging.
