Do you want to live to be a 100?

Serious question: would you want to live to be a 100?

I remember my grandfather (bless him). He was in great shape and very active and independent until he was 85 years old.

But then he had a medium-sized stroke. That was it. He did recover to live at home again and be on his own (with my grandma) but he was never the same.

Physically, it was all down hill from there, for the next 6 years. He did make it to 91, and it was a good run. But he had 2 more strokes.

My grandmother (both mentioned here are on my mun's side, and on my dad's side my grandfather made it to 82 before having a massive stroke and my grandmum was only 69 as she had a sudden ailment.

The point of this thread: the quality of life.

What's more important? Numerical aged, or your quality of life.

Found: genes that let you live to 100

    From The Sunday Times

    May 16, 2010

div#related-article-links p a, div#related-article-links p a:visited { color:#06c; } SCIENTISTS have discovered the “Methuselah” genes whose lucky carriers have a much improved chance of living to 100 even if they indulge in an unhealthy

    lifestyle.

The genes appear to protect people against the effects of smoking and bad diet and can also delay the onset of age-related illnesses such as cancer and heart disease by up to three decades.

No single gene is a guaranteed fountain of youth. Instead, the secret of longevity probably lies in having the right “suite” of genes, according to new studies of centenarians and their families. Such combinations are extremely rare
    — only one person in 10,000 reaches the age of 100.

The genes found so far each appear to give a little extra protection against the diseases of old age. Centenarians appear to have a high chance of having several such genes embedded in their DNA.

“Long-lived people do not have fewer disease genes or ageing genes,” said Eline Slagboom of Leiden University, who is leading a study into 3,500 Dutch

nonagenarians. “Instead they have other genes that stop those disease genes from being switched on. Longevity is strongly genetic and inherited.”

My parents are both alive, fit and well, in their mid 80's and have just put a deposit down on a new home.

Then again both of them didn't spend 20 years pissing it up in Thailand so if I reach 80 I will be really happy.

As Billy stated above, quality of life is important especially for those loved one's around you when you get old and I don't want to be a burden on anyone.

Then again I can go and live with Larvidchr and we can be dribbling, snivelling old drunkards together.

My great Gran lived until she was 107 years Old, she was healthy and of sound mind (very) until the day she peacefully without prior warning died in her sleep, bless Her. she had by then lived 27 years at the same old peoples home and had outstayed 3 different Administrators.

When she had her 105th birthday, a danish magazine invited her for a journey to copenhagen, she had never been, because the then Danish Prime-minister Poul Schluter was born in the same village as her and would like to say hello to her if she wanted to, she answered no why would I want to go and see him I don't know him! and I would much rather see Tivoli (a Famous Danish amusement-park in Copenhagen)

So that is what happened, she was flown to Copenhagen, tried to fly for the first time in her life (after the Airline had a doctor check her health) and went to Tivoli and had a big birthday reception at a fancy hotel with 3 great great grandchildren attending and the Magazine taking photos and made a story about things she had seen and the great changes (from horse-cart to airplanes ect) she had witnessed in her life.

A very strong proud beautiful Lady.

Since I don't believe in the happy hunting grounds I guess I would like postponing the shovel full of dirt in my face for as long as possible. I'm cool with tubes, adult diapers and drool cups.

Many years ago I was bonking a nurse. That relationship lasted a couple of years but, the point of the story is, I wandered into hospitals with her from time to time.
On the male gerry wards, where they keep the old fuckers who are on their last legs and pissing themselves in bed, they have incontinence condoms.
It's the size chart that put me off. The smallest one was hardly any good to a housefly.
Seems your chopper can shrink to the size of a short arse earth worm when you are at the drooling stage.
Nope, I'd would sooner snuff it that have a nurse put a condom on me. Well I would if she had to use tweezers and didn't suck me first.
Be happy dudes. It's a lot more fun than crying.

Great grandmother received the telegram from the Queen and passed away almost two years later, her son, my grandfather, missed out on the telegram by a matter of months . . . I'm reckoning that I'll be a thorn in my children's sides for some years to come!

Grandfather was a smoker, from the age of 14 but not much of a drinker. Pretty sure I won't make it to the century, I believe that life in the tropics, in Thailand, in a bottle and addicted to tobacco will probably cut a few years off the family trait for longevity!

"Do I want to live to be a 100?" Sure, why wouldn't I want to watch my children raise their children and then possibly watch them raise theirs?

I heard recently that testosterone levels drop off by 1% every year after you reach the age of 40 . . . can anyone do the maths to work out how likely nurses, tweezers and condoms are actually going to be of any consequence to my enfeebled mind by the time I'm 100?!
