Buying Gold with my Thai savings?

I have a small amount of THB left over from my Thai wages every month, usually around 15-20,000. Not a lot by any means, and just stick it into a seperate Thai bank account to earn 0% interest. I'll probably use it in a year or two to buy something, so am reluctant to start sending it home every 4 or 5 months at a time, only to bring it back in a year or two.

So how about buying gold, maybe 50,000b at a time. This would likely increase a lot more than it sitting in my Thai bank account, but brings up a few issues:

I know nothing of buying gold.

And safety. I don't think I'd be happy with 200,000b of gold sitting in my apartment. Is there any safe deposit boxes one can rent for cheap, that are actually safe?

    Any ideas, advice, experiences?

    Thanks.

Why not the Thai stock exchange? Prices are cheap and dividends high

I know too little about stock exchanges to be able to relax completely with my money sitting in there.

I like to relax and not worry about things. My investing wouldn't be purely based on getting the most out of it, gold was about 12,000 2 years ago I think, now it's about 18,000. If it increases the same over the next two years it'd be better than sitting in my Thai bank account.

Any reasons you wouldn't go for gold?

At current prices a 5 baht bar of gold will cost you around 89.500 baht.
If you buy gold jewelery it trades at a lower rate than bars.
You can get a safe depost box if you have an account at Kasikorn Bank or SCB bank. They are only available at some branches and subject to availablility.

gold might be overpriced at this stage and go for a long overdue correction

not that many assets these days for bargains, hence most will overpay

just keep it as cash, at least it won't lose money, that itself is a return. Or buy a small condo with a bank loan and use the cash as equity for the loan. Then rent the condo.

Okay, if only I got in 2 years ago.

An 89,000b 5baht bar would have presumably been about around 60,000b.

Just thought of it as an alternative to sitting in Kasikorn earning 0%.

Don't think I'd qualify for a bank loan with current visa/legal status, and wouldn't be too inclined to invest in the Thai property market either to be honest.

If there's anyother good investment assets sitting around out there feel free to let me know. Thanks.

no, sadly. Why do you think banks are paying 0% and getting away with it ?

you need to find the right one, and they can fluctuate greatly or lack liquidity in some instances, so it's more likely not a "safe investment" for individual savings. Last year, some were paying 20% dividend, and then went up 100% in their price, to yield 10% instead.

    "safe investment"
    That's the one for me.

Anybody have some predictions for when the price of gold is going to start falling?

Just researching on some phuket forum from 2008 and they were all saying it's about to happen.

If I was to analyse this 30 yr history chart for example, it's now about the same height as in 1981, if it followed suit and lost 50% of its value in two years, I'd be crying into my Lao Khao.

timing precisely a fall or a correction is like an impossible task, it's pure chance.

You can only make probability estimates.

Think I'll follow your advice Butterfly:

just keep it as cash, at least it won't lose money, that itself is a return.
Or maybe just invest 50% of my change.

Gold has been steadily increasing in price for the last 20 years.
It has come up 300 baht in the last week. Very good investment if you buy on the dips.

Gold goes up as well as down so if you need the money out fast you would have to wait for a "Peak"

    Thanks for chitown nice reminder

this is a nice little scam that has been going since 2003, after the invasion, brokers used to push those laughing about it, looking for suckers and testing them to see if they could sell them a few subprime afterwards

So I'm going to be a bit of a soft-cock and enter gently.

Will probably just go in for 3bahts worth to start, should be about 55,000b.

Plan should work unless the price suddenly begins to crash for the first time in 20 odd years.

    Plan:

Begins increasing in value = me happy
If it then begins to drop, as soon as it gets back to the amount I invested, I sell for that amount and I'm no worse of than if I left it sitting in Kasikorn earning 0% interest. (I presume there's a term for this)

If it rises I'll invest the same amount every 3 months or so.

Probably only in it for 2 years as I plan on spending some of my leftovers then.

    So now some questions.

One can presumably buy a 3 baht weight of gold, but where, down in some China Town gold shop?

How do you know it's genuine and you're not getting fleeced?

And what should I get in terms of documents, if any? or do you just get a receipt?

    Thanks.
