What does this gesture mean anyway?

Stephen Carr, who plays for Premier League team Birmingham City appears to be in trouble with the FA after making this gesture towards the Aston Villa fans after Birmingham were beaten 1-0 by a very dodgy penalty decision.

What I'd like to know is what are the origins of this gesture?, where did it come from? And why is it considered offensive?

I have to admit, if I ever knew, I have forgotten completely.

    From Wiki:

Although "the finger" has been called "the universal sign of disrespect",[3] it is not universal. For example, in Japanese Sign Language, when the palm is facing out, it is recognized as the letter Se. Many other gestures are used in various parts of the world to express the same sentiment.
In the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, the V sign (when given with back of the hand towards the recipient) serves a similar purpose.

In countries where Spanish, Portuguese, or French are spoken, and especially on the Iberian peninsula and in Latin America, a gesture called the Bras d'honneur involving raising a fist and slapping the biceps on the same arm as the fist used, sometimes called the Iberian slap or Iberian finger, is equivalent to the finger. Italy, Poland, and countries under the influence of Russian cultureRussia, Belarus, Ukraine) also see the Bras d'honneur as equivalent to The Finger. (
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Right so basically it's the same as using the middle finger but without actually using the middle finger.

I can vaguely remember doing this at school when I was about 7 or 8 Sadly that's a very long time ago now.

No doubt he'll get fined a load of cash by the FA. They need the money though, to pay for all those new pitches at at Wembley their gonna need

I always thought it just meant fuck you, the heartier the slap on the bicep the better the effect.

Try it whilst saying fuck you, you might like it

it means "fuck you" as I will "fist fuck you"

basically it means "I will impale you with my arm for you to squeal like a pig"

it is obvious, isn't it ? quite surprised nobody know about this one, I do it all the time with the locals here
