    The Ugly Brit Abroard

Like a magnet, some of Blighties "finest" are drawn to The Land of Smiles in search of beach, birds and booze, but not nessesarily in that order.

Whilst Spain remains the place of choice for the UK's finest examples of humanity, Thailand remains right up there.

    From the Commonwealth Office.

    Arrests
    • Spain had the highest number of arrests in this period with 1,663, followed by the USA with 1,460
    • Almost one third (32%) of Brits admit to never checking out the laws and customs of their destination before they travel
41% admit to drinking ‘much more’ on holiday than they would at home
FCO advice to prevent unwittingly getting into problems with the law abroad:
    • Before you travel, check out the local laws and customs of your destination – what might be perfectly appropriate behaviour or dress in one country might be completely different in another. Get a good guidebook or check out Travel advice by country that contains the latest travel information by country
    • Many arrests are due to behaviour caused by excessive drinking. Know your limit and try not to drink more than you usually would at home
    • Avoid areas where you might be unwittingly caught up in trouble e.g. rallies, marches or protests
    Drugs
    • The USA had the highest number of Britons arrested for drugs offences (259 in this period), followed by Spain (194) and Thailand (111)
    • 63% didn’t know that some medication in the UK e.g. alcohol based prescription drugs and painkillers such as Codeine are illegal in some countries. In Japan for instance, the Vicks inhaler and Sudafed are illegal
FCO advice to prevent getting arrested on drugs offences:
    • Know the drugs laws of your destination; they are more severe in some countries than others
    • Some medicines that are perfectly legal in the UK are illegal in other countries – check out Travel advice by country and always carry your prescription with you
    • Don’t be tempted to get involved with drugs – either taking them or carrying them for other people
    Hospitalisations
In this period, Spain had the highest number of hospitalisations, with 1,137 UK citizens being admitted to hospital, followed by Greece with 841 and Thailand with 200. Failing to take travel insurance can cost a lot more than you think. If you suffer a broken leg in Europe it can cost you up to £7000, while an air ambulance from the USA can cost up to £35,000. Even a simple bout of gastro-enteritis in the Mediterranean will set you back £600.
35% of us admit to not always taking out full travel insurance when we go abroad and more than one in ten of us admit to worrying less about our personal safety while on holiday.
FCO advice to prevent yourself becoming ill or injured whilst on holiday:
    • Find out about vaccinations or medication for the country or region you are going to well enough in advance for any preventative medication to take effect
    • Always stick to local health and safety guidelines, such as sticking within your level of experience on ski slopes and not diving into water of unknown depth
    • Always take out full travel insurance and ensure it covers you for everything you intend to do – otherwise you risk hefty medical bills if you become ill or injured
    • If you’re going to be driving, familiarise yourself with the rules of the road, the condition of the roads and whether the general style of driving is different to the UK – and if you’re hiring a car always do so from a reputable company
    Deaths
Spain experienced the highest number of British deaths in this period (including British residents) with 1,243, followed by France with 294 and Thailand with 274. Despite the headlines, most deaths abroad are due to natural causes.
    FCO advice around death abroad:
    • Ensure all members of your party have declared all medical conditions to their travel insurer – if an uninsured person dies whilst abroad any treatment they have received and their repatriation to the UK will not be covered
    • All deaths must be registered in the country in which the death occurs. If a person in your party dies, whatever the circumstances, report the incident to the local authorities immediately
    • There is no obligation to contact the British Consul / Embassy but they can offer support and practical advice at this distressing time

Fook Wayne you really have got it in for the Brits here mate.

I know DD upset you the other night but he's only the owner here and nobody takes him seriously let alone worrying about what he's got to say.

Whilst I like having a light-hearted dig at the Brits, especially the Poms I also enjoy receiving a bit of good hearted stick in return.

I might suggest you lighten up a bit and drop the otherwise your gunna give all us Aussies a bad name. 5....4....3....2....1.....................

I know that some just hate a mirror being held up to themselves, however as with my so called "rant" on another thread, perhaps you and/or others can point to any errors in fact on my post?

I think you will find it is accurate. Moreover, during more than 25 years travel to Thailand, working and on leave/holiday, I have seen a great deal and I dare say a great deal more than most if not all here. From tsunami's {death on a grand scale} to "rescue" of children from enslaved labour and sexual servitude, I have had something of a unique peek into the underbelly of Thai society and various sections of the so called farang community.

It never ceases to amaze me how often I witness what can only be described as disgraceful behaviour by certain sections of that farang community who seem to be over represented when it comes to crime, loutish and anti social behaviour and general thugery in Thailand.

It is true that Thailand attracts the lowest of the low from all over the world and no one nation holds exclusve representation when it comes to the above however the so called larger lout complete with a total disrespect for others on many levels is a live and well in Thailand. Most have a brain the size of a pea and have no idea whatsoever of the real Thailand, nor are they interested to learn.

Thailand is many things to many people and whilst I have traveled all over asia from China to Indonesia since my late teens, I have never felt so ashamed at being a guset in another country until I see this low life at it worst in action in Thailand.

Wayne, I take it you are an australian of greek or Italian extraction?

The name Wayne seems to imply that.

You are right however, there are many digusting Brits in Thailand and at large throughout the world and I thank you for highlighting this fact.

What %age of Brits in Thailand would you class as disrespecting larger louts?

As with so many assumptions, you are wrong.

I am as Greek as you may be Eskemo mate.

As to a percentage, who knows. I don't carry a calculator with me.

I do know this however. There is something within the Brit psychi it would seem to treat others aboard with contempt which most likely comes from hundreds of years of colonialist rule all over the world. Perhaps that is one explanation. Perhaps it may be that the lower class Brit has a giant chip on his shoulder and behaviour learnt at a young age whilst being dragged up comes to the fore whilst overseas. Instant arsehole.....just add alcohole. Who knows. But I do know this. Many of the thugs and low life farangs that live in Thailand, living off their wits, involved in one scam or another and in particular call Pattaya home, are Brits.

I have it on good authority from above, that the law in Thailand in regard to allowing into the Kingdom farangs with a criminal record will be changing soon and the proposal I am told is to ban ALL from Thailand who have a criminal record as defined to mean; conviction of any offence that attracts a jail term in their country of 12 months or more.

Now that should sort a few out.

    Lets keep it simple then....

Do you think it is a majority or minority of Brits in Thailand that fit into your low class criminal category?

It's a simple question, I'm sure you can drag something out of the vast font of knowledge you possess.

There were about 800,000 British visitors to Thailand last year. If 111 of them got arrested for drugs (and that's arrested, not found guilty), that works out at 0.014% of the total. It's a fucking national disgrace. Thank you, Wayne, for bringing this outrage to my attention.

I don't think the English behave any worse abroad than they do at home. Go to any town in the country on a Saturday night and you can find drunk arseholes having fights. It's just the way the English are.

Whilst travelling around so much Wayne, and I don't doubt that you have experienced the good and bad of what the human race has to offer have you ever spent any amount of time in one location and in doing so made any good friends here??

It is so easy to judge someone, or in this instance a race of people and when sitting across the bar from one that is mouthing off or acting the dick.

I lived in Bangkok for 14 years before I moved the family to Pattaya 8 years ago and have met many wonderful people from a cross section of Nationalities and to be honest the vast majority of my good friends and acquaintances are British. I have also met my fair share of dicks but I forget these people as fast as I have met them.

To continue to draw attention to your obvious phobia, and sorry to say that seems to be the British you are only setting yourself up a bit and detracting from the fact you seem to be a fairly intelligent person in real life.

Yes you are right. It is a very dangerous place as I mentioned previous on another thread and again of course received the usual high quality {not} replies from the misinformed.

As stated previous, the Brits are vastly over-represented in Thailand when it comes to injury, death, criminal or just down right bad behaviour. It seems that with many Brits abroad, they collectively leave their brains at the airport and become what may be described as the worst ambassadores of their cold and bleek little island in the north sea.

The arrogance which seems to flow from being British is well known in many parts of the world with a history that would make Hitler proud in many instances. Almost everywhere they went, they brought with them disease, hatred toward the locals and often a way of life compltely at odds with the locals. But in regard to Thailand, yes many a Brit comes to the land of smiles only to return to blighty in a pine box - that is true.
