Oh fcuk! The monsoon rains have done what they do each year in Luang Prabang >> wash away the bamboo bridge. It is rebuilt every November after the river depth and speed of current decrease.

Note to self: Don't use the bamboo bridge in the rainy season.

Last year, I actually crossed over that bridge when the river was the same height and flowing fast!

    The next morning? No bridge!!

That pic reminded me of a Doco about the Great Whites in South Africa, The photographers towed a fake seal behind the boat to capture these types of images.

Many, many moons ago, my first Chinese Malay girlfriend lived in a house just like the one cyrille posted.

Brings back some lovely memories of Penang...

Many many years ago I lived in Malaysia, at that time had what we called "monny drains" My mom reversed the car out the driveway one day and got stuck in one, the neighbors helped to lift it out.

Was anyone in Penang when they changed the one-way system at midnight, sometime back in the mid-90's. Unfortunately, it was the night the island had a complete power cut and everyone decided to drive their car around to keep cool.

    Jolly entertaining night...

From my living in Yangon thread in 2012, here's a photo of my apartment in a typical Burmese tenement street.

    Post a photo a week, of anything/anywhere-yangon-jpg

For some reason, most of the photos in that thread no longer display - I guest they were deleted/lost during website upgrades...

Indeed and well spotted. I suspect that old contraption rattled, shook and belched, and perhaps only slightly cooled the apartament.

Nice . . . very, very nice. There's a similar one in Selangor, an old government building. It's a shame that Malaysia caught on late to renovate and preserve . . . but at least it did.

A/C?!! Nope - there was no A/C. Also, in those days (2012) the street electricity was diverted at night to the tourist hotels. That's why many buildings had large generators on the pavement to provide electricity during darkness. However, my building did not. This meant that while I had a fan to use during the daytime, after dark there was no power, and so I got used to sleeping (or trying to sleep) naked on top of the bedsheets in temperatures of around 34 degrees C.

Since those days, I have never slept under bed-covers. I got used to sleeping on top of them, even with a cooling fan or A/C.

Yes, it was rather dire, but an interesting memory in my life

Oh, absolutely . . . memories of not-so-pleasant times are best as what they are . . . past experiences.

Speaking of sleep-experiences . . . I was working on a rubber technology JV in the south Indian state of Kerala, a few hours north-east of Trivandrum and we were staying at the owner's residence . . . a big palatial kind of thing (he stayed in Mumbay). The house was seldom used aside from by the plantation manager.

The residence was smack in the middle of the plantation area and when the lights went out I and I was trying to get to sleep (no aircon, but it was in the hills) I could hear noises everywhere . . . quiet noises. I must have fallen asleep but I woke up with things crawling all over me - face to feet.

I jumped out of bed and switched the light on - thousands and thousands of little black beetles the size of your pinkie fingernail . . . literally everywhere. Ears . . . yuck

Ran downstairs and found a few more people gathering for the same reason - ended up we slept on the dining and kitchen table with the legs in water buckets.

It was grotesque . . . these things live in that particular area . . . gross!

    Yes, an experience . . . and a memory
