The where do you grocery shop and other questions thread

When you go to buy some groceries when you are in Thailand, where do you go?

    Why do you go there?

Why do you not go to some places?

What places do you go for a specialty item and what items are they?

What store has the best selection?

    Who has the best prices?

If you vote other, please tell us what other is.

If you go to a Thai market, tell us the name if you know it or maybe the location.

I voted for a few of the big ones because I go to them sometimes.

I threw in a vote for 'Other' because sometimes we give a list to our maid and I have no idea where she buys stuff, probably from the guy who comes down the soi with a songteaw loaded up every morning but it could be a local wet market.

    Tesco Lotus usually.
Only because they have the best French Sticks, when they're just out of the oven they're great.
If a supermarket fixed their tills on the express lane so they wouldn't accept any more items after the maximum of 10, I'd go there though. Or maybe they could fix it so a trapdoor opens on the 12th or 13th item to go through and drops the selfish git into a pit of boiling oil.....or something. Just a thought.

    I move around so much.
In bangers i prefer Carefour on rama4.
In Ranong Tesco lotus is the only game in town.
In Phuket I mix it up.
On the road I do local markets.

Having listened to a discourse this evening about how this is cheaper in Makro, but that in Tesco, but the Chinese place is cheaper for the other- and the local markets are good for sumfin else, and I forgot to mention Big C, well I reckon the mrs shops just about everywhere.

No Tops, Villa, Carefour or Foodland in our town.

Most of our shopping is from Makro. We've found they have a bigger and fresher assortment of vegetables, seafood and frozen goods.

Tesco's for items except fresh food. Our local Tescos fresh food leaves a lot to be desired.

    Occasional trips to Big C.

Everyday essentials like milk and bread from 7 - 11.

My wife likes Big C best, but does shop at Tesco Lotus too, but they have not much farang shit, especially Lotus, and Big C does at least carry True US zip lock plastic freezer bags and not just them cheap Thai imitations like T/L..

I rarely go shopping unless I am on my own and want to buy something nice for breakfast for the kids and then I go to Foodland or Friendship supermarket in Pattaya.

When I am in Bangkok I shop mostly at Villa but an important issue for me is getting there with minimal hassle (traffic) and having close safe parking space.

I find Foodland the only place I can get most of the ingredients I consistently need at reasonable prices. In fact, overall I find Foodland to be cheaper than even the bigger supermarkets. Their bread is shite though, so I get that from Tesco Lotus or the nip place that is in all the shopping malls.

For day to day essentials I use the local markets or 7/11.

The bigger places simply don't have the products or the quality I require nor does Villa which is a rip-off anyway and has been known to sell out of date products.

Certainly no Foodland up here, but I do think foodie was the best supermarket in Pattaya.

we do buy all our veggies at Big C or Tesco/Lotus because they are better quality and do not have the live bugs in em. and just seem to be better.

I went to both of them today, but did not see that many specialty foods from the west. Someone told me there is a store on central road with lots of good dairy products and breads.

It might be Tops. or Foodland. Or she means by 'central road' not pattaya klang, but 2nd Rd.

Anyway, Foodland darling- on Pattaya Klang. Overall best.

In 1999, Big C Supercenter PLC. decided to form a business alliance with France-based Groupe Casino, known for Géant. Groupe Casino buys 530 million shares of BigC capital increase, owns approximately 63 percent of the company, making them the largest shareholder after the company's recapitalization.

Funny that a France-based Groupe Casino owns 63% of Big C.

I thought it had to be 51% Thai majority.

    Anyone care to explain that?

I don't shop. If I want food I'll buy it from Isaan street stalls and wash it down with Lao khao.

What's wrong with embracing the local culture?

    Bloody western snobs.

I do the same, the high majority of the time.

In my neighborhood, about a 4 minute walk away, there is a delicious lunch open at a mini cafe that is open 3 hours per day. It's deeeelicious. I heap on the fish sauce (too salty and cannot be healthy for me) and about 3 slices of chili on a buffet style meat and veggie dish with rice. I choose the various option of meat & veggies. I get soup with greens as a side also.

    All this, for $1.14 USD.

Quick, convenient, delicious, and filling. (But it could kill me one day.)
