^Don't know. Guess in whatever his state of mind was at the time, it wasn't. Never said he was bright, but he certainly will be the talk of the town for a bit. You can't imagine how many guys are living on half pensions now under this law, which, as I said, applies only to Federal government employees. Example: You get married at 26, right after you start your job. You are relatively low-ranking and paid at the time. You get divorced at 36, ten+ years later. No particular drama, just both call it quits. You work another twenty years, with no contact at all with the ex. You then retire at 56, at the top of your salary level. And then, this ex from twenty years ago comes out of the woodwork and, if she has never remarried, lays claim to half your retirement for the rest of her life. And, if she doesn't surface, the government will go and find her. Not too hard to understand why this drives some folks to extreme measures.

    Why is that so SD?

This woman has spent 12 years of her life (and we only get one of those) with a man she now does not love and for whatever reason.

To now change the laws and legislate that she would now deserve nothing from that marriage is unfair to say the least.

Marriage is a joint investment not only fiancially but also morally and if one splits up then everything should be divided 50/50.

Half pension for however many years they were married would be fairer.

Does the law work the same way if the wife is the federal employee?

I don't think it was very wise of the guy to quit. If she was getting 2,000 bucks a month she is hardly going to be rolling in clover.

Yeah, but you risk getting caught.
