How about the Russian KA 52 then, a mad looking beast.

And the original KA-50 it is derived from.

Many of my favourites have been mentioned already, but I have not seen this beauty in this thread yet:

Easily mistaken for the spitfire, the hurricane is less agile but much more burly. In many ways the WWII equivalent to the A-10, it was a potent ground attacker and could handle itself in the air reasonably as well.

Colossal (for its time) Junkers G38

Used by the Luftwaffe as a transporter.

    Top speed 140 mph

Wings so thick that there was seating inside the wing with windows on leading edge.

Tiny elastic band powered Kamikaze machine the Mitsubishi Zero could turn on a dime.

Also carrier based, its pacific foe the Grumman Hellcat could never out manoeuvre the nimble Zero but was much sturdier and could absorb damage that would see the diminutive Zero cartwheeling into the waves.

    IL-2 Sturmovik

These planes were built like tanks, the armour was so good that the pilots would bring them in low and slow to attack ze Germans.

More WWII Russian aircraft pictures here Russian Air Force Pictures

Slightly off topic, but if you're into gaming, the sim IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey
lives up to the hype, I've played the free demo download on Xbox live, flying Spitfires over southern England against waves of Heinkels and Meschershits, to Mustangs rocketting panzers in the Ardenne, it ranges form arcade easy to full sim at which I failed, and will no doubt gain a following of hardcore pilots battling it out online. I was lucky to witness one flying at an Air show a few years back. It was an Australian built machine, designation CA-18. A supercharged 24 Litre Rolls Royce V12 makes a hell of a nice racket.

The Royal Thai Air Force Huskie was often underestimated due to its totally shit-house appearance which was in fact a deliberate ploy to lull the opposition into a false sense of security before deploying the hidden retractable hellfire missile bearing stub wings and 3900 rounds per minute armour piercing gatling.

Probably the EA6B Prowler. A tactical electronic warfare aircraft. Black a city out without firing a weapon.

    Here you go mate.

    Very nice.

Gets my vote. The top P-38-flying ace, and top US ace of WWII was a guy named Bong, which makes me like it more.

Mosquito gets my close runner-up vote. Must have read "633 Squadron" a dozen times when I was a kid, and watched it every time it was on teevee. Star Wars totally ripped this movie off.
