Yes, providing fires (as in Artillery) for III corps, the Marines, Navy and Airforce in 2003 and following security missions in 2005 is much like hanging out in canteen I guess. Don't worry, I am sure you can be proud of something in your life.

^One B29 was deployed in England as a propoganda tool - make the Gerry's think the B29 were heading their way. Most of europe was bombed with B17, not a bad plane itself.

I had the privilege of flying the simulator at RAF Binbrook as a kid. The real thing sounded awsome.

As good a thread as any for this little anectdote I guess...

There was some wealthy farmer in NZ about 10yrs or so ago that imported some variety of MiG or other (can't remember exactly what, a fighter though) from Russia. What I do remember is that it was hardly state-of-the-art, at that point being 20+ yrs old. His plan was to show it at airshows, take tourists for flights, that kind of thing.

Good idea but it hit a snag when he was refused permission to fly it in NZ air space. The reason given was that apparently it would leave NZ air space in a matter of minutes at not even full throttle and was therefore too hard to regulate.

There was also the fact that this one relic of a Russian fighter could've, in theory at least, singled-handedly dispatch the entire (then current) squadron of NZ Air Force Skyhawks.

^They fly low... In a lot of trees!

Friend of mine became one of the first woman (if not the first) in NZ to qualify with the Air Force to fly fighter planes. Very proud of her I was...

... And then the Air Force went and scrapped their fighter wing.

I think that was after the Skyhawk's tried taking part in the gulf war but ran out of puff trying to keep up on the sorties. Their retiremenet leaving NZ with no air strike capability as bemoaned by top brass Air Commodore Steve Moore.

I met him at a defence industry thing in Wellington a while ago and made the civilian mistake of calling him Steve. He frowned slightly and informed me that I was to address him as Air Commodore Moore.

The Caribou. Australia's Vietnam transporter which flew out of RAAF Ubon (along with Baldrick's CAC-27 Sabres) and which was finally retired just a month or 2 ago.

Standing on the end of the runway, to watch and listen as Phantoms take off on dawn patrol is a favourite of mine. Real hard on stuff.

I was working in Sweden a couple of years ago and the guys in the hanger next door were taking a privately owned Mustang out of storage and prepping it for some summer air shows, here it is taxiing out for it's first test flight, sounded amazing, very loud and lumpy on idle but flying past it was sweeet. like a top fuel muscle car.. with wings.

How much is one of those worth do you think?

Anywhere from $1.5 - $2.5 million USD, depending on condition...

The 'Commemorative Air Force' flies out of the same field I do here in Texas... Largest collection of Flying war birds in the US... Quite a sight when they launch for air shows...

And pissed off the Aussies no end too. NZ always had a wing stationed in Ausland cause they didn't have anything like it over there. Sure they had all the fancy F-18 and F-111s but nothing to fill that low level strike role. You might laugh, and say so what... But a handful of Argie skyhawks with unguided bombs did a real job on the Royal Navy in the Falklands.

NZ further pissed off the Aussies by then not following through with a plan to buy F-16s from America. Though NZ did make a good chunk of change on the deal as the exchange rate differences between when the cash was put aside till the deal was turned down meant they came out a profit.

The skyhawks got mothballed and a buyer from America was gonna take them. That deal fell over cause the Yanks wouldn't let him import military aircraft. So the planes are still mothballed, costing the government money, as they have to be flown every so often and kept in a usable state should a buyer be found.

RNZAF now consists of a few paper darts I believe.

    Kiwis are flightless birds anyways!

Fighters are a waste of time I reckon. All the transporters etc are pretty necessary given our position and relationship to the Antartic bases, but what good is a few aged fighter jets going to do us even if we're attacked?

Besides, just like our Navy, anyone who did attack would be too tired after rowing all the way down there anyways!

I bet if would have been a different outcome if that was a bunch of U.S. marines or Army soldiers. "You Americans are so violent", you bet your ass we are, somebody has to to make up for rest of poofters
Well now you have the opportunity to tell us what you think of your beloved marines sucking JJs' cock on the latest jet ski scam movie.

Bragging about your exploits in the forces does you and your country no credit at all, especially when you get caught with your pants down.

Here ya go gbt: (JJ in new Phuket jet-ski dispute)https://teakdoor.com/thailand-and-asia-news/56727-jj-new-phuket-jet-ski-dispute.html
