Gets my vote. The top P-38-flying ace, and top US ace of WWII was a guy named Bong, which makes me like it more.
Mosquito gets my close runner-up vote. Must have read "633 Squadron" a dozen times when I was a kid, and watched it every time it was on teevee. Star Wars totally ripped this movie off.

The famous Harrier Jump Jet, most successful one of the many attempts at building a vertical takeoff and landing. Uber cool!
Nice pics, did you all take them yourselves?
^Yep, still got the singe marks on my hair from the blast of that Harrier taking off. :)
(Actually no, just Googled mine ;) )
I kinda guessed that!! Sorry in a rather pissed state.
^
That's the best state to be in.
Unless you're a Yank. In which being pissed is not good.
Not to mention being pissed while pissed, which is a state of mind to avoid. I often hear Brits using "pissed off" to mean "angry," and it leaves me feeling somehow disappointed, like they might feel hearing a Yank say "bloody."

Nicely depicted in CG in the History Channel "Dogfights" show. Has everything- courage, honor, talent, tragedy. 20 years-old, immensely skillful, died young, stayed pretty. What a display of heroics, and what a waste.

Why aren't the pilots waving at the camera?
Sorry, off out to buy another bottle of inane drivel wine...
The pilot of this Royal Thai Air Force Albatross is not waving at the camera because he is still in bed since he was at the karaoke lastnight :)
Or maybe he is just bending down to change the Thai music CD? Either way, good luck to the navigator in the back seat.

yeah.....I'm kinda partial to this one myself..

America's first fighter jet, the F-80 - victor of the first ever all-jet dogfight (with a MIG-15).
https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2009/09/392.jpg
The swept wing MIG was a better plane though and the US quickly designed the similar but sturdier Sabre (background) to more consistently outdo the MIG (foreground).

^Well even having a Ferrari doesn't quite cut it as it still comes down to the drivers skills as a driver like Luca Badoer will attest too... :)
I think they are a waste of money.
^What?? Ferrari's??........I agree...
One of these beauts was plying lazily back and forth across a clear blue sky today as if it was part of an airshow.
3 times it thundered directly overhead not more than 300m above the beach.

yes they were used by the military

Truly a thing of majestic beauty and the kind of elusive charm that cannot be matched by anything from a contemporary design shop.

My all time favourite is the DH Mosquito !
But there is a personal downside.
As a DH apprentice in the 50's we had to clear one of the flight sheds which had 6 mothballed Mozzies in it .
We stripped out the engines and other mechanical bits and BURNT the fuckers down the back of the airfield :tantrum:
As we did it over a weekend we got time and a half for the saturday and double time for the sunday !!!!!
I like the Russian SU 35 with the thrust vectoring. I like the low stance. It looks better then a Raptor.

Best looking fighter of WWII era.
The fighter that effectively won WWII. Mustang P-51.https://teakdoor.com/images/imported/2010/09/863.jpg
^ Only after it was given an engine upgrade...
Nothing beats the Spitfire for looks.
Just seen this thread for the first time, and it really took me back to my old Airfix days. :D
The Hawker Typhoon was a bit of a brute.

The Mustang's main advantage was it's loong range (due to fuel tank design) in escorting the bombers to where they needed to be, establishing Allied air superiority over Germany. It was also fast, durable and packed some fire-power.
The Spitfire was still the best looking though. High defensive performance, but too short a range to get the bombers to, erm.. Dresden.:mid:
Ah, those were the days...

The Supermarine Spitfire.
Art in the air. Those RR Merlin engines have an unmistakable tone. When I was a kid, I made a MK IV from an airfix kit. It was the machine flown by Jonnie Johnson.
I fell in love with the spitfire, built models of every MK from K5054 right to the MK 24.
Back to your picture.
