Although we gave them religion and steam trains and fledgling democracy, we also took much of the countrys' wealth and natural resources. We were not alone in this, and the Largest economy in the world cannot hide now and say, it's nothing to do with us.

The fact is Norts that the American economy growth has slowed dramatically and most people don't have the money to spend on anything but essentials these days.

There has been references made to soap lines and I can just imagine what these hungry people will think when they find out that 73 million of their money has been donated to another country.

I don't believe any first world country now has the means to donate this type of money anymore particularly as they are struggling with their own society problems which are clearly not being resolved.

The donation wasn't to Mugabe, it was to the United Nations World Food Programme.

How many people will it stop from starving to death? How many of those people whose lives have been saved will give a damn about how measly it is. Put yourself in their position and rethink your attitude. If the money can save your children's lives are you really bothered about how large or small an amount it is on a geo-economic scale? Empathy, try it, it's one of the major keys to understanding. Your arrogant attitude, it'll keep Mugabes limos in gas, means nothing to those people who'll be provided with another few months worth of food because of that money, to them it's life.

I do agree with financial aid to third world nations whose I own sovereign global bonds or high yield bonds denominated in their local currency.
So any money thrown at Turkey , Brazil, Indonesia and Mexico is ok with me.
I instead missed the entry on Ukraine , Romania and Russia, so I hope they get into troubles to be given a second chance.

For myself , I don't think it's a good idea.
Plenty of food around. Production can be easily increased should demand rise.
The problem is not the lack of food, but the lack of money for the most desperate people to buy it. And that's a political problem much more than an economic one.

My attitude is not arrogant at all, it's reralistic. Until Mugabe and his henchmen go, the people will see none of this aid however it is channelled. He only allows aid in when he can control who gets it. The people are tired, sick and scared because they have been beaten to within an inch of their lives. Forgive me if i don't share your optimism about aid in this basket case of a country. it does not mean i have no feeling for them quite the opposite.

Sorry you think my response is not serious. Let me expand. If the practice of eating other humans in areas where there is little food was carried out, this would have the effect of decreasing the pressure on the land for food production, to a point in time where the size of the population could sustain itself once more. If a population (of any species) cannot support itself in a given area, they move or die out. By supplying the means to survive, free food, the situation will only become worse as more people breed more people. I wish i could actually come up with a humane solution, but like most others i can't.
