    Bargaining chip - absolutely.

And Al Gore owns the publication they write for. Pretty stupid of them to even go to NK.

This will be in the media a lot. There will be meetings, and "this and that." More food, more aid, more whatever.

I'm sure they certainly didn't expect to get 12 years in prison.

This is unbelievable, although not surprising in the least.

It said the court "sentenced each of them to 12 years of reform through labor." The KCNA report gave no other details.
    Forced labour more like it.

Well, being North Korea what exactly did they expect? A chat with immigration and a nice tourist visa?

This is unbelievable, although not surprising in the least.

^It is not surprising coming from NK. I'm surprised they weren't shot instead. After what happened a few years ago on the NK/SK border.

From what I've read, they just might be used as pawns, in order to gain something from the U.S.

According to this big write up in Time, these women were doing a write up on the refugee status on the NK/China border, and were in a more isolated place. NK lets journalists into the region, but usually on their orders, and with a guide to follow them.

^^ My confusion was more based on the story being unbelievable and yet not surprising in the least at the same time.

    Possibley naiive. Likely.

Also, possibly wanting the "scoop" on NK during these times (last couple of years) and NK gets so much world attention.

    Good for a career.

When they get released over a deal (which I think will happen) they can do interviews, be "brave" and write a book.
