    I think the English have finally lost it!

    Prince Charles wants grey squirrels "culled"

    "In the past, politicians and environmentalists have discussed measures to limit the boom of the grey squirrel, which has few natural predators and is classed as a pest. One politician has even suggested celebrity chef Jamie Oliver encourage schoolchildren to eat them.Under a law passed in 1981, it is illegal to release a grey squirrel into the wild after it has been trapped. Instead it should be humanely destroyed."

    Prince Charles calls for squirrel cull[at] - Yahoo! News UK

    What on earth is the penalty for releasing a squirrel rather than killing it?

    Whats the big deal? The grey squirrel is an introduced species from North America, and it's introduction has endangered the native red squirrel- in fact extincted it in most parts of the UK. Poms should definitely eat grey squirrel, just like Aussies do roos & emu's. It's said to be nice too.

    Australia culls roos and koala bears. These are native species. Introduced species such as rabbits, foxes, cats, redfin (English perch) and carp have caused no end of ecological problems.

    I don't know where you get your information from but Australia certainly does not cull koala bears.

    He means murdered.

    If a magistrate tried convicting anyone of not killing an animal I'd terrorise him.

    It must be terrifying to be an animal on this planet
    Indeed.

    We have enslaved the rest of animal creation & have treated our distant cousins in fur and feathers so badly that beyond doubt, if they were to formulate a religion, they would depict the Devil in human form.

    As Sabang pointed out numb nuts, the grey squirrel is non-native to the UK and does untold damage to woodland, and to the native red squirrel by carrying and spreading a disease to which the grey is impervious.
    It is therefore a pest in the UK in the true sense of the word.

    The grey squirrel represents a serious and growing threat to our native woodlands and priority species. These threats arise principally through:
    • the stripping of bark leading to the deterioration of trees, reduced income for woodland owners and a reduction in woodland management and associated public benefits;
    • competition with the native red squirrel and spreading the squirrelpox virus;
    • predation of birds nests and competition with endangered species such as the dormouse.
