^What it is? I hope your wife is okay, somtam.

    Poor NR! Feel better yet?

A few times in Thailand, I've been bitten by something, but I don't know what. It was a mystery, and still is. I figure it was a wasp or bee, but I ended up with a huge, round, welt on my back, under my bra strap. It was stinging, and itchy. The swelling and pain went away after two or three days. I notice that alot of Thais told me to put, tiger balm on it. It seems like tiger balm is the ultimate remedy in Thailand.. Have you tried it?

After 2 days, a much larger swollen area, another visit to the docs and the same prescription I decided to lance the bump myself- the puss was like Mount Vesuvius. The relief lasted 1 day and it was then swollen and painful again. This time I lanced a larger area and squeezed like buggery - out popped a 1cm stinger. Left a couple of nice scars which I now attribute to my time at Goose Green fighting the Argies with Colonel H.

I got nailed by a centipede. Bugger was in my dive boot. Hurt a lot, then I broke out in hives from head to toe. Which sucked.

Anyway, it was very painful for a short time (more painful than an English wasp sting) but the pain died down very quickly. Today, though, I have a large red lump (about 2 inches in diameter & hard) where I was stung. Have even had to remove my watch. It looked like a large wasp or hornet, but was black with a couple of vertical stripes. Anyone had any experience of these? Are these inflamations normal after being stung by them?

What is the worst thing you've been stung by in Thailand and what was your experience?
I wouldn't worry too much about those wasps, they are "normally" pretty harmless, and the sting should disappear within minutes (I take it they are a long skinny wasp, and fly in an "up and down manner - with a paper nest like a trumpet?)

I would be a bit worried if the sting stays red for more than a couple of days though..it might be worth checking you haven't got an infection as that can turn nasty.

I have been stung by a few of the local varieties, and normally the redness disappears within a day or so - however - the itching irritation can last for more than a month.

Maybe get it checked if it is stil red!

I got stung all over my head by a bunch of angry bees - big buggers, I swelled up like the Elephant man for a few hours and then it was gone. No medecine needed, they will only give you anti hystemine as far as I can gather anyway! It's hardly worth getin into the car.

I got attacked by the same ones you mention - and it is like being electrocuted, but the pain disappeared within minutes, and I never had any redness or swelling.

On the other hand, I got stung by two "Tor Hua Sua" and that was the most terrible pain I ever felt - I was pruning a tree with a nest of these BASTARDS that I didn't notice, honestly, the stings threw me about 10 foot across the ground - it was like a high voltage shock - luckily they only got me in the arm, but the next day, my arm was fatter than my leg, and I had to use the other arm to lift my poisened arm onto the steering wheel to drive the car! These were definately the worst things I have ever been stung by. That was over a year ago,(maybe 2 years..) still have the scars and they still itch!

I later found out that some dipshit kids near my village had decided to destroy a nest of these devils, two died and the third was critical!

Hope you get sorted, as there is nothing worse than getting sick here, apart from getting sick in the Uk or sick in the US without any insurance...at least here they are reasonably cheap!

Just a quick side point that some people can have serious reactions against stings etc that can easily be life threatening.

Normally a first sting gives some problems, but a subsequent sting can be fatal due to anphylactic shock (IIRC). In these cases, emergency medcal treatment must be sought IMMEDIATELY.
