Pros and cons of living in the sticks

I pen this here thread barely able to see the fucking computer screen, for it is covered in insects. I've got mossies eagerly nibbling at my head, taking advantage of the lack of fan to blow them out of my face.
My only means of vision at the moment is a dull lit monitor and a mouse which blinks red evrey now and then. The crickets are pissing me off, cos they've taken the palce of the film I had half an eye on.

Happens out here every now and then.

A big fuck off, bang, and the power's gone. Who knows how long for...could be all night...fanless, tv less, sanity less.

Must rely now on the powers that be to come and correct the problem...but in the sticks, no one can here u scream.

On the plus side, erm, it is nice and peaceful.

Mossies do seem to be attracted to computer screens. Is it cos it flickers? Somebody should invent a lamp to attract them.

I live in the sticks and rarely get bitten in the house.

Have you not got any door & window screens fitted ?

Also get one on those gas lanterns that runs off your cooking gas bottle
They will get you through a power cut and are very bright

Stick to central Thailand and you get the best of both worlds. Cheap, nice people, less pollution, easy access to cabel TV internet but no riots, motorway parking or skunk pussies.

^^ No, I'm in my shed/office which is sort of inside and out. Here I can escape the riff-raff and drink a few bottles of ale without being frowned upon. Inside the house I rely on a fan to keep the mossie's at bay(haven't got screens, but we aren't bothered that much by them) My daughter sleeps under an impenetrable net, starting to get a wee bit worried about the new mossie prob.

Nice view (I can envision it). Mebbe get a ceiling hang-down mozzie net over you and your computer.

Nah....I think its the prospect of free porn that attracts them.

I was browsing the construction threads and someone advised having plenty of outside seating around the home as it was likely you would spend as much time in the garden as indoors. The only problem with this is that sometimes it is just too hot to be outside, even in the shade and in the evenings, sitting outside can often mean getting eaten alive by mosquitoes wishing to paint the town red....preferably with your blood.

I've lived in the Khon Kaen sticks and the heart of Bangkok and found a happy compromise in the outer suburbs. Plenty of greenery, fresh air and quiet but only a 30 minute drive to Sanam Luang.

Ditto here, living out in Nonthaburi, we have the best of both worlds, peaceful, clean air, plenty of rustic small villages and khlongs, but downtown Bangkok is just half an hour away. Since they opened up a Villa supermarket next door a few month back, we have everything we need right here. The only downside is the rush hour traffic getting across the Chao Praya river in the morning......

Seems to me the ideal lifestyle would be to have a house in the Sticks and a condo in Bangkok, or maybe Pattaya (depending on whether it is flesh or society you miss most).

I like it in the Isaan Sticks- friendly people just pop by, the locals are very helpful- we're planting some vegies and a whole lot of seeds & stripling have just been given to mrs by the locals. When you get work done, they are keen and eager to please- and a beer and a smoke for a job well done is genuinely appreciated. People are basically better in the sticks. And just heading out in the motosai or car, getting lost and sitting down outside a humble shop for a beer somewhere is a pleasurable way to wile away a few hours.

Foodwise, you don't really suffer if you've got a Makro/Tesco/Big C within commuting range. But theres always the Smog, for when you feel like a change.

Many of the farang who set up house in the sticks become bored, very bored, posting on internet forums at rates of 1000 plus posts per month.

Others become alcoholics, the wife wont mind as long as the farangs life insurance is up to date and a pension awaits.

It will be happy days for the 'family' then.

^Maybe the Thai boyfriend/husband will just have to wait around in the background longer than they wanted, though these country folk are good at playing the 'slow burn' con.
