    what would you do?

so what would you do if you asked for a bank loan, and by mistake the bank deposited £4 million instead of £10,000?
well thats what happened to an asian couple in australia
know what they did? they ran ; )
interpol are now on their trail

    so what would you do?
    run?
    or give it back?

    In my fantasy, I'd dream.

But in reality, I do know that they bank will find out, they contact authorities, demand the money returned, and any spent be paid back.

Because the error in the deposit happened without notice, I doubt this couple know how to change identities, hide, disguise themselves, and conceal and launder the money.

The couple will likely be caught.

What would I do? Take a holiday to Patters for a few months and play hard - and consider it a loan.

    We'll see what happens.

I'd make as much money on that 4 mil as quick as possible knowing that i'd have to pay it back.

Not sure that would work. As soon as you touched the money which you knew was not yours, you would probably be guilty of theft.

If you don't want a life looking over your shoulder, I think give it back ASAP is the only real option.

Mind you, how the hell did they manage to withdraw even a sizable chunk of it from their account?? You would have thought them sauntering up and saying they would like X million in cash would have set some immediate alarm bells ringing. And you can forget ATMs. transfers also would be easy to track. Hmm.

Say nothing. Go and ask for a bigger loan and hope lightening does strike twice, then put the lot on black/red on a roullette table. When that comes up,give all the money back to the bank, sort out the family and friends, and hawk my obviously huge solid golden testicles to the gold shop and cash them in.

It happened to me once, on a smaller scale

the bank contacted me and asked for permission to take back their mistake

I ignored them, and they took it back anyway

I should have taken all the £40 and scarpered

Happened to me too. I deposited 150 quid and when I checked my balance I had 1500 quid. Happy Day's, I thought.

The biggest mistake I made was telling my mum, she made me give it back to them and tell them they'd made a mistake.

I was once offered a job which i initially accepted and at the last minute, didnt take. I had submitted all my bank details and was paid the salary into my account for 4 months. The payments stopped on the fifth month. I didnt say anything and never heard from them again. Shortly after they fired about 3000 uk staff and moved their operations to India to save money. Bollocks to telling them i thought, I'll spend the money in England, they can go to hell

    Cool

    back to OP

it was New Zealand not Oz, Westpac Bank, 21 May 2009

Leo Gao applied for an business (gas station) overdraft of NZ $100,000 and was accidentally credited NZ $10,000,000, and fled New Zealand with $3.8 million and his girlfriend.

I presume the balance was somehow stopped from being xferred when the bank realised the error. The couple put reports on their Facebook pages, Hong Kong, Macau then disappeared into China.

Googled and it appears there is/was no co-operation from Chinese authorities, couldn't find any mention later than Dec 09 (here: Westpac botches runaway millionaire hunt - National - NZ Herald News ) . . . looks as though they got away with it, unless they decide to return to NZ.

    The bank employee was sacked.

    Best wishes to them!

I'm with you on that one - banks have robbed consumers for years

in one of the news items NZ Police stated they couldn't be charged with theft, but with (something like) using money you knew wasn't yours.

Can understand why China wasn't interested in chasing them up for extradition, not as if anyone died, and he's probably cruising Shanghai in a Merc these days, supporting the local economy
