Do not, I repeat, DO NOT Take a staph infection lightly. I spent 6 months popping antibiotics trying to get rid of one I got from a hospital in Hawaii ( where the worst ones live, not Hawaii but the hospital) and another 3 months mainlining them into a catheter in my arm while waiting for the klong running down my shin to heal after the titanium plate there was removed. I was told after the first 6 months that the titanium gave the infection a place to hide from the antibiotics, which was why every time I went off the antibiotics it would come back in about 24 hrs.
Haven't had any relapse since( almost 5 years), but I would never want to have to deal with it again and this was the long story short telling of the tale.

OK - my turn - a couple of munutes ago I accidentally cut off my arm while slicing some bread, I have lost a lot of blood and I am feeling a bit dizzy. I have taken a paracetamol tablet and a couple of beers, but there is still blood gushing from the stump that used to be my arm.

My question is, should I put something on the wound? - I am afraid it will sting a bit, and perhaps all I need is just another paracetamol. Can my severed arm be reattached using superglue or duct tape, or will I grow a new one? Is there anything I can buy over the counter that would speed up the healing process?
Any error in tact, fact or spelling is purely due to transmissional errors...

There is really nothing you can do about growing a new arm unless you are a crustacean, then nature will take care of that, but if you are not then and have some Made In USA duct tape it will work best as it has held the family sedan together for nigh onto 17 years.

This a strange place to look for a doctor, anyone with a brain would go to a hospital ER to find one I would think.

I got pricked, quite deeply by a rather thorny tree the other day, sadly, the wound appears to have gone somewhat septic.

I have been to the local "ANIMY" and they reckon it is "Golden Staph" a pretty nasty little bastard of an infection.

    Now, the questions -

I contracted the wonderful "Golden Staph" for real in China, and almost died from it, (according to the doctors - I got a cut on my leg that became somewhat inflamed and, apparently, I was told if it got to the glands near your balls, then you are in deep shit!)

Anyways, I was lucky by all accounts, it didn't get my balls, and was cured by daily injections in the arse of the most painful antibiotics I have ever had - over a 10 day period, alternate, left cheek right cheek, and belive me, walking out of the doctors was not an easy matter.

    Now, question?

If I have already had numerous punctures and antibiotics for Staph, can it really come back? - or am I immune?

Why would you get this bacteria from a tree?

Should I trust the Thai doctors or are they purely after a freebie?

The pain is not the same, however the swelling is starting to become a pain, but in my arm seems no where near as bad as my leg previously...what about some broad spectrum antibiotics, would these work...just for the hell of it.. it was a lime tree!

Any advice would be appreciated as I really despise hospitals and fear injections!
    Yes, I'm a doctor.

Now: go see a physician regarding this. Good day. The bill is in the mail.

Naw, reading through this thread, it would be more like :

"Well kown teakdoor poster dies of own stupidity"

Wow, that's a pretty amazing statement - antibiotics do not provide a vaccination function. That's probably the stupidest, and most dangerous assumptive statement I have ever read.

Plus, if you feel you are immune, yet after your cut, the infection progresses, I would think that the answer is pretty clear - namely, that you are not 'immune.'

Yes, not only can bacterial infections return (particularly when you introduce the bacteria directly to your bloodstream in the form of a cut), but there are hundreds and thousands of varieties of bacteria, sometimes different mutations of the same strain -- even if you were somehow immune to one variety, you can get reinfected by a different strain, or a stronger strain.
