    Gave my boss notice today.

Told my boss today that I will be pulling the plug in December that should put me in Thailand in February as I am planning a side trip to Peru for January. Only thing holding me back now is that I am working out the details on the sale of my home. Can't wait to get the hell out of here but staying until December makes sense financially.

No idea as yet...my plans are still a little vague. I like the looks of Ayuthaya (sp?) and Chang Mai but I would like to be able to do day trips to the beach so that might drop CM of the list. I will likely travel around a bit before deciding.

There is a good chance I might do a year in Bangkok and look around for a more permanent location then. You never know I may like Bangers but I think it is a bit too big of a city for my taste. Never having been there I really don't have much of a clue.

Bkk southern burbs is the way near enough to the Big Smoky Mango to peruse of its amenities/services, but not in it
and, if without wheels, a not too long train/bus ride to HuaHin/Chaam areas fer some skinnydippin' jellyfish permitting

Good luck SC. Take your time finding a place - nothing worse than signing up for a six months rent and then realising that you'd rather not be there...Well there are quite a few things worse but you know what I mean.

I thought you were considereing renting it out.

    Is this possible?

Keeping your RE will bring you lots of passive income over the coming years.

I did consider renting it out but....

    1. In order to be eligable for non resident tax status I would need to employ a third party property management company (relatives not allowed), this would eat up much of the profits.

    2. I own my place outright and I think rental units are only a great deal if leveraged.

    3. Prices have gone through the roof lately (doubled in last 3 years), I hope I am timing the market well when I sell. If interest rates go up and prices fall I may buy back in later.

I am not saying that I think rentals are a bad investment I just don't think it is right for me right now.

Thanks for all the advice all...my lurking on these forums (despite never having been to Thailand), was a real good form of research. I don't think I will truely know how I am going to like/dislike things until I get there but I have picked up many practical tips (I plan on bringing lots of shoes ).

Now that I have fixed dates I am working towards I am getting impatient to get moving!

I likely will buy one but if I do it won't be anything too fantastic. After I look around and see what the roads and traffic are really like I will likely buy either a motard style bike (dirt bike with street tires) or something like a Honda super 4/Suzuki bandit.

I think my days of riding hard core sport bikes are over but a sport tourer would not be out of the question, something like a pre-VTech Honda VFR800FI might be nice. Maybe even a big naked bike like a triumph speed triple. That KTM looks nice too .... so many choices!

On the other hand I might buy a small diesel pickup and give the bikes a miss.

Good idea. Pickups are cheap here as long as you buy a new one. Second hand cars are way overpriced.

I certainly do like driving in Thailand, much safer than in Germany or the UK.

The climate makes biking a pleasure, and the motorists are generally pretty alert and considerate.

Not that anyone really cares but my ongoing saga of attempting to quit my job and get the hell out of town just had another wrinkly thrown in.

My boss came in today and asked me what it would take to get me to stay. He suggested a $10,000/year raise and it took all of 1/2 a second to turn that down. He then asked me to think about what it would take to get me to stay and he would see if he can make it happen.

Now I am completely mixed up on this....
    - My house is almost sold (in the legal phase now offer was accepted and financing is secured).
    - I have moved half my shit into storage
    - I have done the prep work to ensure I can declare non-resident status
    - I have mentally convinced myself leaving was the right thing to do ....

But now I am considering many other things.

    - I could still quit my job then freelance back to them as a consultant.
    - I could work a reduced schedule where I work 3 days a week, Tuesday through Friday, get 3/5 of my vacation plus benefits (for roughly 3/5 pay).
    - I could work 8 months of the year and have 4 off plus 2/3 vacation entitlement plus benefits (for roughly 2/3 pay).
    - I could work 6 months of the year and get 6 months off plus 1/2 vacation and other benefits (for roughly 1/2 pay).

Working from home or remotely is not an option because of the nature of my work and to be honest I don't know if they will accept my reduced schedule options but they are what I would need to stay.

At 1/2 pay I would still make about 4 times what I could teaching english in Thailand so it is a tough decision to make.

I am still under 40 and walking away from my career at this point is pretty scary but I need to do something as I have no life with my work schedule and my remote location.

    decisions, decisions, decisions....

Curious to know if anyone could offer perspective on this...after all I am a bit loaded tonight and my peace of mind is suffering on this one.

Gotta agree - add with no air con, the hottest I have ever been in my life is sat at traffic lights on a red hot v-4 with 250 other bikes in the middle of summer waiting for Green

^^^ Money is a poor motivator, at the end of the month the reasons why you want to leave are still there no mater how much you are being paid.

2 or 3 days off a week sounds like a waste if there is nothing in the area to spend your time on.

3 months off 3 months on would give you the chance to spend some time in Thailand and establish whether making it a permanent home is for you - and work, no matter how shitty, seems a lot more bearable if you know that on the 31st of whenever you will be away from it for a while.
    Lord, deliver us from e-mail.

^I agree. During your 4 or 6 month stay in LOS you could try your hand at teaching in LOS to see if it suits you.

It is a bit of a rash move I admit but on the other hand I have a number of fall back options available so if it doesn't work out, I can always try something else. Maybe try another country if I decide I like TEFL. Maybe try to get a job in mining in Asia, I believe their are many positions in Indonesia bu I don't think there are many in the rest of SE Asia.

I was offered an international placement in Africa where I could pocket a pile of coin but it would mean a year of living in a dicey area in a camp surrounded by guards.

I could also always return to my current job or try find another job in Canada, the job market is quite strong right now.
