    "Modern Day Slavery" in Thailand

Well for one Thailand is currently called “Disneyland for pedophiles” and has up to 600,000 AIDS cases and a huge sex-for-sale industry, driven mostly by European and American tourists who come to rent what they want. It is estimated that the number of prostitutes in Thailand ranges from 800,000 to 2 million. Among which 20% of Thailand Prostitutes are 18 or younger.(“Disneyland for Pedophiles”)
Why is this multi million dollar industry still functioning?

Currently it is illegal under Thai law to have sex with girls less than fifteen years of age. Many Thai politicians and community leaders want the age limit raised to sixteen or eighteen and include boys as well since there is no mention of them in the law. However the corruption stands in the way of improving the conditions and punishing those responsible. Police officers or even politicians are bought to help protect those who are being prosecuted for sexually exploiting children. In some parts of Thailand prostitution became a fastest and most convenient way of making good money and many are not willing to give that up even if it means hurting the innocent. (“A walk on the Depraved Side”)
This is only a small part of the article. For more reading.

"Modern day slavery". Prostitution in Thailand

Yes, it does bother me. Considering I am going to teach there. How do you tell your children about prostitution? Or is it something they are covered from?

Being a woman, and thinking that the body is sacred, and any form of prostitution, especially for children is not right.

Correct. Thais make up the vast majority of prostitute users in Thailand.

As usual, a know-it-all western woman gets on her high horse about a subject which she knows absolutely fuck all about.

The move to child prostitution was very clumsy too. WTF has that got to do with old, fat blokes coming here and paying women for their company?

If you lived here you would know.

    Thailand’s Long Tradition of Prostitution
Modern Attitude Shifts vs. Huge Economic Benefits
Is Prostitution shameful and immoral or simply healthy adult sexual fulfillment between consenting adults?
Domestic prostitution has for centuries been a part of the Thai tradition. It was simply accepted as normal and it has been estimated that as many as 95% of Thai men have been to local brothels that are found in most every city of Thailand. Some say 95% may be high and more for sensationalism, but the percentage is certainly high.

According to reliable surveys of sexual behavior, every day at least 450,000 Thai men visit prostitutes. Thus, much of the impetus sustaining the incredible rate of prostitution in Thailand is cultural; "Thai men think it is their right to have cheap sex, ... and there are enough poor Thai women to make it possible."
Prostitution in many cases has become integrated with initiation rights: "[f]or many Thai men, a trip to the neighborhood brothel is a rite of passage, a tradition passed from father to son."
Certainly, prostitutes play a large part in forming the sexual identity of young Thai males; "a demonstration of heterosexual orientation by having sex with a female prostitute is an important rite of passage for some groups of Thai men." This is borne out by the available statistics: "[s]tudies show that the majority of Thai men have their first sexual experience with a prostitute - the act is often a part of high school and university hazing rituals - and that 95% of all men over 21 have slept with a prostitute."
In addition to rites of passage, the activity of visiting a whorehouse has become a social activity in many cases, "'Sex with prostitutes seems to be a way for men to enjoy each other's company,' notes Barbara Franklin of Care International, ... 'It is often part of a night out with friends who share food, drink and sometimes even sexual partners.'’
And while it is perfectly acceptable for men to visit prostitutes, premarital sex between men and women who are dating is strictly forbidden. Many Thais believe that this double standard has helped create the thriving sex trade. "In Thailand, women are supposed to be chaste until marriage and monogamous afterward," says writer and social critic Sukanya Hantrakul. "Men are supposed to be promiscuous."
Indeed, a survey of both sexes by the Deemar Corporation in 1990, bore out that "80% of males and 74% of the females responded that it was 'natural for men to pursue sex at every opportunity."

    So much more as well.....

the foreigner based sex trade is just the sort of upper end market.( a minor part)
The really expensive stuff is local as is the really cheap and perverted stuff.
There are teenage brothels that only cater for Thais.
mamasans procure young virgins for Thais(not available generally to westerners) etc etc
This has been going on in Thailand for a very long time.
And as far as slavery is concerned I don't believe it ever endeed here.

^Yes, I am aware of the history. I think I am opening a big can of worms here, and really no harm intended. I would just like to get others opinions. There is always two sides, to the issue, and probably many more than two.

I just can't believe the government allows it, and even promotes it. Many of you may think.. well what is wrong with it. Well if it is between two consenting adults, then it may not be so bad, but sex trafficking is a huge problem, and the aids epidemic.

So come on over and challenge the government to fix it. Its not my problem at all.

Why would my kids know what a prostitute is here anymore than in the west. Do you think I take them to those areas.?

Try cleaning it up in Korea.
Prostitution in Korea While there are no street hookers and the milieu is drug-free, prostitution is nonetheless widespread and a serious problem in Korea. As of 2003, a study performed by the Korean Institute of Criminology showed that 4.1% of the women in their 20s were working in the trade industry. However, things might be improving rapidly in this regard with the strict enforcement of a law against this type of activity passed in September 2004. For instance: In 2002, South Korean police arrested 3,500 people in the sex trade. But since the crackdown was launched, some 16,951 prostitutes were arrested in 2004 and 18,508 in 2005, the Ministry on Gender Equality said. As well, Seoul's largest red-light district now only has 60 brothels compared to more than 150 just a few years ago. The campaign has encouraged more than 1,200 people a year to enter a government program that offers a 7.6 million won ($8,000) grant for job training and other expenses as well as a place at a halfway house to help them leave the profession. The program also provides interest-free loans of up to 30 million won to help former prostitutes start their own businesses. Prostitution in Korea takes on several faces including the massage parlours, barber shops, bars, brothels, room salons, juicy bars, turkish baths, strip clubs, etc, spread throughout the country. The job is moderately lucrative. According to a recent poll, 80% of women working in the entertainment industry in korea make between 3 and 5 million wons per month net income (3180$US - 5300$US per month), 7% make in excess of 5 million wons, and 13% make less than 3 million wons. The average salary of prostitutes is comparable to the one of korean engineers with 10+ year seniority or professors at public universities. According to the Korean Institute of Criminology, 20 percent of adult males aged between 20-64 purchase sex 4.5 times per month, spending a sum that breaks down to 154,000 wons (165$US) for each visit.
For tourists and aliens alike, only the least desirable options are available. Indeed, in the "decent" red-light districts, foreigners are generally not welcomed especially if they are not accompanied by a korean friend. This is due to several reasons, one being that foreigners are believed to be more susceptible to carry sexually transmitted diseases.
In the case of the room salons, the hostesses are generally not fluent in english and the presence of foreigners does create some incomfort in a situation where chatting, singing, and drinking takes place for several hours. The first class room salons have a cost per person per evening of 1,000,000 wons and include a night in a motel room generally located one floor above or below the salon. It should be noted that for both the second-class and the first-class room salons, physical intimacy with the hostesses will only be possible on the second and subsequent visits.

In one of the smaller Australian state capitals where I come from there are three pages of "adult relaxation" ads in the daily paper every day.
If people were looking for prostitutes they could save on airfares and hotels by staying there rather than coming to Thailand.
I was reading an article online in the Melbourne Age on the weekend where a social worker said she personally knew of over thirty underage girls working the streets in Melbourne.
Let them with out sin cast the first stone.

Phucketbound, you might have received a better reply to your question, had you not included that garbage you copy and pasted from some blogsite. Where do those figures come from? It just reads as pure tabloid sensationalism, to cater for thoses uneducted masses, who swallow up crap like this on daily basis. For someone who has traveled around Thailand, im supprised you swallowed it, or are you one of those types who`s coming to save Thailand from itself? Prostitution will never stop. It goes on in every single city of every country.
I aint superstitious, but I know when somethings wrong

There are some points of disagreement in the article.

I'll look further into who wrote it. This issue is disturbing, and bad, but:

Thai prostitution, and sex-slavery is Thai exploiting Thais.

    Period.

WHO says this, among other organizations.

Blaming foreigners is looking at it like an iceberg - you see the foreigners on the surface. A small percentage of an iceberg is exposed through the surface.

Foreigners with money lure many into this - no doubt.

But prostitution and sex slavery has existed in Asia for centuries, and it's Asians using it to profit from Asians, for use by Asian customers.

    There are no sides, really.

Prostitution has existed for centuries. Voluntary. Consenting.

Yes, there are rare and horrible cases of slavery. Asians enslaving Asians, for Asian customers. They should be punished.

I just can't believe the government allows it, and even promotes it. Many of you may think.. well what is wrong with it. Well if it is between two consenting adults, then it may not be so bad,
Whether it's "legal" or not is irrelevant. It has always existed, and will always exist.

There is no social welfare net. What would happen if all of the money spent in Pattaya that is sent up north dried up? If Western Union payments stopped? Gold jewelry, and other means of support. Allowances to "tee-raks?"

but sex trafficking is a huge problem, and the aids epidemic.
This is an entirely different issue, bad as it is.

I applaud the fact that you are at least trying to educate yourself about Thailand before coming here: something many more people should have done before coming here thus avoiding getting frustrated.

This forum has many members with year's of experience living here. Many of these experiences involve the shitty side of life in Thailand - corruption at all levels, police indifference to serious crimes, murderers getting off, extra-judicial killings, a monkhood full of criminals, a weird form of democracy, and of course the topic of this thread - prostitution. Posts above have quite correctly put you in the picture of where the core of Thai prostitution lies. Those fat falangs with their tiny Thai hoes are a MINISCULE part of it.

How long do you intend to stay in Thailand? Do you REALLY want to know about what goes on here? If you're going to be here on a short term contract, sit back, learn a little Thai and enjoy all the icing that is available.

If you plan to stay here for a lot longer and are a sensitive holier than thou type person here's a few hints:

    - Don't learn Thai (you won't like what they say about you).
    - Don't look at Thai newspapers (you won't like what you see).
    - Don't assume that all falang males are sex tourists (you might not get help when you ask for it)
    - Don't preach that whatever form democracy you hail from should be instilled here (you will be pissing in the wind).

Basically, don't come here expecting paradise and then spend the rest of your stay moaning about stuff you can do jack shit about when you find out it isn't all pristine beaches, delicious food and smiling faces.

No need for Millie Tant here, I'm afraid.
