Prostitution in Korea While there are no street hookers and the milieu is drug-free, prostitution is nonetheless widespread and a serious problem in Korea. As of 2003, a study performed by the Korean Institute of Criminology showed that 4.1% of the women in their 20s were working in the trade industry. However, things might be improving rapidly in this regard with the strict enforcement of a law against this type of activity passed in September 2004. For instance: In 2002, South Korean police arrested 3,500 people in the sex trade. But since the crackdown was launched, some 16,951 prostitutes were arrested in 2004 and 18,508 in 2005, the Ministry on Gender Equality said. As well, Seoul's largest red-light district now only has 60 brothels compared to more than 150 just a few years ago. The campaign has encouraged more than 1,200 people a year to enter a government program that offers a 7.6 million won ($8,000) grant for job training and other expenses as well as a place at a halfway house to help them leave the profession. The program also provides interest-free loans of up to 30 million won to help former prostitutes start their own businesses. Prostitution in Korea takes on several faces including the massage parlours, barber shops, bars, brothels, room salons, juicy bars, turkish baths, strip clubs, etc, spread throughout the country. The job is moderately lucrative. According to a recent poll, 80% of women working in the entertainment industry in korea make between 3 and 5 million wons per month net income (3180$US - 5300$US per month), 7% make in excess of 5 million wons, and 13% make less than 3 million wons. The average salary of prostitutes is comparable to the one of korean engineers with 10+ year seniority or professors at public universities. According to the Korean Institute of Criminology, 20 percent of adult males aged between 20-64 purchase sex 4.5 times per month, spending a sum that breaks down to 154,000 wons (165$US) for each visit.
For tourists and aliens alike, only the least desirable options are available. Indeed, in the "decent" red-light districts, foreigners are generally not welcomed especially if they are not accompanied by a korean friend. This is due to several reasons, one being that foreigners are believed to be more susceptible to carry sexually transmitted diseases.
In the case of the room salons, the hostesses are generally not fluent in english and the presence of foreigners does create some incomfort in a situation where chatting, singing, and drinking takes place for several hours. The first class room salons have a cost per person per evening of 1,000,000 wons and include a night in a motel room generally located one floor above or below the salon. It should be noted that for both the second-class and the first-class room salons, physical intimacy with the hostesses will only be possible on the second and subsequent visits.
I would suggest that the official revised policies on prostitution by the U.S. Military present in Korea has had a substantial impact in creating an awareness among the Kor govt as it relates to the apparent social illeffects of prostitution.

I'll advise anyone who is reading though that the glass picture window red light districts in Seoul, Daegu, Pusan, Kwang Ju, and many, many other cities is Korea are still abundent as are the upper class prostitution houses Gisang girls that provide entertainment and fulfill sexual desires.

Yes, the room salons are something else aren't they? I differ on your suggestion that it is only after the first visit that physical intimacy can be achieved. Heck, I've seen the hostesses move the floor table out of the way to make room to jump the bones of their patrons.

But then again, nothing like was in the wild west of Korea back in 70, 71, 72, 72..... Now thoose were the days....

What? When the girls were poorer and more desparate to live?

I am sure for some people that would be really grear, but for others, not so.

Reputedly, the oldest profession in the world, i suspect it may be the last surviving profession unless someone solves the current global money crisis. And the game is not confined to ladies selling their wares. In fact Thaland seems to have all three genders on offer, (and a few inbetweenies as well).
If it does become the last paid job on the planet, i think Nana might have to lower her fees a bit.
I for one, have no problems striking a deal with a pretty woman, or even a less than pretty one depending how well the beer goggles are working.
The prettiest women aren't always the best in the sack, so i like to study body language and demeanor before haggling.
This is not intended to offend PB or Lily, i just find it odd that a womans view is at such odds with the mans, when most parties involved in the business, especially in Thailand, seem fairly content with the staus quo.

As someone posted earlier, if the women want a better choice, let the government educate them, remove the cultural barriers and provide well paid jobs to replace the sex industry.
I think governments worldwide have more pressing matters to deal with.

And what you have said does not offend me, but 'fairly content, with selling your body is really a no brainer.

I know wer have all these men telling us that they are happy with that and that is what they want to do, and they probably have been brainwashed into thinking that too, but really and honestly, would you want that for the females in your family?Prostitution is soul destroying.
As we speak, there is another thread running on this board about how some bar girl has duped some man and the posts on that thread are the opposite of here, some by the same people.

We are debating this as outsiders, and i think the only answer is to have a poll of bar girls and get the answer straight from the horses mouth. (If only i could be sure they were telling the truth?)

Both my ex wives and my sisters 3 ex husbands practiced a form of prostitution. It just depends on your cultural point of view and the interpretation you place on it.

    What form of prostitution?

Do you mean that they married you, had your children and expected you to provide for them?

    How unreasonable!

It wont ever be 'prevented'. It will always be around in desparate poverty, but it shouldn't be a career choice in countries that are not poverty stricken, just because your parents can retire and your brothers can sit around all day.

Can anyone truthfully sat that is not how it is in Thailand?

I have been married for 28 years. Twelve to the first wife and sixteen to the second. I provided for them and sired five children. In both cases i was put out to stud once i had served my purpose.
I feel no ill will towards them and am grateful for the many lessons i learned. I will not marry again.
I am fortunate to have a Thai GF who understands and appreciates a man with old fashioned values. We are an equal partnership unless she insists otherwise, and i usually do as i am told.
See, it works, all i have to do is compromise occasionally and i always get my own way.

    edited for typo

But that doesn't explain how you have labelled them as prostitutes.
they did nothing, didn't rear your children, didn't cook your meals, didn't do your washing, didn't keep your house clean?

    Why were they prostitutes?

You seem to know an awful lot about my ex wives Lily. You are not related are you?
They both went out to work and expected me to do all that stuff, plus use the old five fingered widow in lieu of what i get now for free.

Why do feminists think prostitution is so horrible? Most think porn is horrible and degrading to women. So, I have this question to ask them. What do you think of gay porn and gay prostitution? I suppose once a "wimmin" isn't involved, it's all ok. I live on an island, how do you feel about the old hags who can't get anything at home that come here and pick up the beach boys and pay for everything? Or does your sympathy end when a woman isn't involved?
How do you feel about the poor old men that come here and think they've met the girl of their dreams, only to get taken for eveything they own? Do you feel sympathy for them? Because that is the most likely result from the sex trade in Thailand.
PB, you think you know Thailand, but you don't. Relating sex tourism to pedophilia is idiotic. Like I said before, pedophilia is very prominent in Canada, if you are so concerned, learn to discern the two.

-- It is difficult to estimate the number of persons who currently work, or have ever worked as prostitutes for many reasons including the various definitions of prostitution. National arrest figures range over 100,000. The National Task Force on Prostitution suggests that over one million people in the US have worked as prostitutes in the United States, or about 1% of American women.(1)

As well as trad Chinese whoringmongering US r+r helped develop Pattaya into what it is today ta Nixon
