That men flock to Thailand to get cheap sex often with underaged girls or boys, or that they are forced into it?
Does the fact that Thai men do most of it (after all, the numbers have to be with them) make it ok for western men to get in on it?
In my limited experience of prostitution in Thailand, most of the women involved seem to get at least some enjoyment out of it. Even if that only means satisfying a cultural need to support their families. The poor will use any means to try and extricate themselves from poverty. The western definition of poverty probably does not apply here, because for many poor Thai families, subsistence farming and living off the land is enough. If you have an ancient culture of prostitution in a poor, (by our standards) country, it is unlikely to have developed because of foreign tourism in the dark ages.
It already existed, so contemporary prostitution in Thailand helps to support, but does not underpin, the tourism industry. It gives Thailand a higher profile in the west, so to observers such as PB, it may seem exploitative, but i'm sure the Thai people, both male and female, just see that as an opportunity to exploit the farang.
I do not support or condone anything to do with child prostitution.
Heart of Gold and a Knob of butter.
And giving it a higher profile because of the sex industry, is a good thing?
How do you know for sure that the Thai people don't see it as exploitative?
I've worked with a few ex-prostitutes in a shelter, that really did feel exploited, and abused. There is two sides to every coin. Those that want to get out, but don't really have a choice, or much opportunity. If the government would legalize it, perhaps they could get more support for the ones that want to do it? Anyway, everyone has their own view. I believe there are many that get a lot out of it, such as money, and the chance to be seen on a 'rich falang arm.' Whatever..I'm not going there to save anyone. Just interested in your opinions of expats living the

A serious one at that. Can't even dispute the article, but throws dumb insults.
No insult whatsoever. Simply pointed out the fact that you obviously know nothing whatsoever about autism, or speech impediments.Originally Posted by phuketbound
I'm a bit concerned that you're going to be teaching. Teaching children, where? What age range?
Are you qualified ?
If prostitution is to end in Thailand, the same things are going to have to happen as they did in Western countries. Education.
Victorian London was awash in prostitutes. Since free education for the masses, plus opportunities in the work-place to use that education, prostitution is far, far less prevalent.
Unfortunately, this is not going to happen in Thailand. The ruling class here in Thailand will keep the general population ignorant. An unwanted by-product of education is political awareness and intolerance to corruption and unfairness.
Thailand is still a feudal society and the ruling class want to keep it that way.

Hmmm, you sure you wanna be in Thailand? Hope you don't think the locals are gonna change their country for you.
Nothing sacred on this planet I'm afraid. Maybe it's just me, not being able to tune in to the special invisible friends.
Well why didn't you stay over there then,Originally Posted by phuketbound
And what goes on in Thailand is none of your business anyway, you don't even live here, and unless the ho's are getting your share of the willy what are you worried about, no body gonna bother you if you are a western female, you are the reason we are here.
God Damn, she sure sounds a lot like Lily don't she,, do you think........naw
Prostitution is a job nothing more nothing less - that's why it's legal in most countries around the world or looked the other way. If you want to sell a shag and you are of legal age, and not forced into it then go right ahead. Just make sure you practice safe standards and health check-ups - after all your body is your business so you need to protect it.
99.9% not forced to, and do so willingly because they know they can make more dosh and have sanuk mak mak mak then could doing some menial job that pays 6K a month. (make that in a few days if they are any good) They end up sending dosh back to family - building new home or getting some poor sap to pay for it. Then you have the middle class or hi-so uni lot - do it for fun and plain materialism.
